Position: Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Engineering Technician III - V) with Security Clearance

We provide full spectrum Operations and Maintenance (O&M) support of various combatant craft, patrol boats, Special Operations Forces platforms, and coastal craft, ensuring performance and fleet readiness. SA‑TECH currently hires a Heavy Vehicle and Mobile Equipment Service Technician for CCD at Naval Station Norfolk who will be responsible for the preventative maintenance, service, repair, troubleshooting, and testing of forklifts, trailers, and other mobile equipment (heavy equipment).

Job Description

All work will be performed safely in accordance with industry standards and best practices. Responsibilities include inspecting and diagnosing equipment, completing repair and maintenance, troubleshooting complex issues, operating and testing equipment, maintaining accurate records, communicating with stakeholders, and adhering to safety protocols. Work conditions may require first shift (0700‑1530) or second shift (0830‑1700) and involve working inside and outside enclosed buildings, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and reaching.

The position requires physical dexterity and strength to work on large equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough inspections of heavy equipment to identify potential issues and ensure proper functioning using diagnostic tools and software.
  • Repair or replace worn and damaged components, including engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems, while performing routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot various problems with heavy equipment using specialized tools and a comprehensive understanding of system interactions.
  • Operate and test equipment after repairs to ensure proper functioning and make necessary adjustments.
  • Complete detailed paperwork and maintain accurate logs of all repairs, maintenance performed, and parts used.
  • Communicate with equipment owners, operators, and colleagues to understand needs, explain repairs, provide recommendations, and ensure smooth operations.
  • Follow all safety protocols and regulations when working with heavy machinery.
  • Perform tasks inside and outside enclosed buildings, involving sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and reaching.
  • Maintain physical dexterity and strength required for working on large equipment.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent with post‑secondary certificate or associate’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., diesel technology or heavy equipment mechanics) preferred.
  • U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, OEM, or related trade school training preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of heavy equipment repair experience; level of technician will depend on years of direct experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, and follow technical directives correctly.
  • Preferred additional skills: OEM certifications; familiarity with MTU, Cummins, Caterpillar, or Steyr Diesel engines; CDL license with a clean driving record; strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of heavy equipment systems.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and software; comfortable with computerized diagnostic systems and other testing equipment.
  • Physical strength and dexterity needed for lifting heavy parts, tools, and working in awkward positions.
