Job OverviewThe HVAC Mechanic shall be responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems within supported facilities. This role ensures optimal environmental conditions for personnel, equipment, and critical infrastructure by maintaining system reliability, energy efficiency, and regulatory compliance. The mechanic will conduct routine maintenance, service repairs, and installation of new units or replacement parts according to specifications and established safety guidelines.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Comply with all applicable standards, policies, and procedures, including safety procedures and maintaining a clean work area.
- Perform facility maintenance and repair duties as needed and assist in other areas after primary job duties to facilitate cross‑training.
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC/R systems including AHUs, VAV boxes, FCUs, split systems, package units, and commercial refrigeration equipment.
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance in accordance with scheduled services.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control system issues using test instruments and BMS/BAS systems.
- Monitor and adjust HVAC systems to maintain temperature, humidity, and air quality standards.
- Respond to emergency maintenance calls and system failures with minimal downtime.
- Maintain accurate service records, work orders, and compliance documentation.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, EPA regulations, and local mechanical codes.
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and other maintenance personnel as required.
- Support energy management initiatives and continuous improvement programs.
- Properly handle, recover, and dispose of refrigerants.
- Assist with commissioning and retrofitting of HVAC/R systems.
- Operate scissor and boom lifts.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Good interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and delegate when appropriate.
- Ability to function well in a high‑paced and at times stressful environment.
- Commercial/industrial license issued by the State of Virginia.
- EPA Section 608 Certification (Universal preferred).
- At least five (5) years of hands‑on HVAC/R maintenance experience in commercial or industrial facilities.
- High school diploma or equivalent GED Certificate.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC/R systems, electrical controls, and mechanical components.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS).
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools and test equipment.
- Knowledge of acceptable maintenance procedures and occupational safety and health regulations.
- Steady, reliable worker who can read simple instructions and follow diagrams.
- Able to work independently.
- Ability to determine tools and equipment needed to complete tasks.
- Can lift/carry up to 50 lbs. frequently.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Willing/able to work outside in hot or cold conditions.
- Effective communication in a positive, professional manner with coworkers, clients, and visitors.
- All contractor personnel working onsite at federal facilities must meet federal government security clearance standards.
