Telecommunications Technician

Greater Norfolk, VA Area (Chesapeake, Suffolk, or Portsmouth, VA)

Onsite

Compensation: $20 - $27/hr (DOE)

12-Month Contract (possibility to extend)

ABOUT

THE ROLE

Brooksource is seeking a Telecommunications Technician to join one of our largest Fortune 500 energy and utility clients for a 12-month onsite contract in the Greater Norfolk, VA area, with the possibility of extension. In this hands‑on, field‑based role, you will provide installation and maintenance support for critical telecommunications infrastructure across Virginia and North Carolina service territories. You will work with a variety of network equipment, test and troubleshoot single mode fiber optic cables, connect equipment to DC power systems, and ensure proper cable management and grounding.

This opportunity offers valuable exposure to the telecom infrastructure of a leading energy provider, the chance to develop in‑demand technical skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team. Significant travel, flexibility for overtime (including holidays and weekends), and adaptability to changing workflows are required.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Provide installation and maintenance support for telecommunications infrastructure across Virginia and North Carolina service territories.
  • Install and maintain various types of network equipment.
  • Test and troubleshoot single mode fiber optic cable.
  • Connect equipment to DC power systems, including 48V DC power systems.
  • Run power leads, install fuse panels, and perform cable management, fiber management, cable terminations, and grounding.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for all work performed.
  • Adhere to established safety standards, best practices, and change management policies and procedures.
  • Travel extensively (up to 75%) across service territories to support installation and maintenance activities.
  • Work effectively within a team environment while also functioning with minimal supervision.
  • Adapt to changing workflow on a daily and hourly basis, demonstrating flexibility and problem‑solving skills.
  • Operate in various working conditions, including outdoors, cold, heat, loud noise, and around energized wires (up to 25% of the time).
  • Utilize reliable transportation capable of handling multiple terrains.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Basic skill and understanding of electronic/telecommunications equipment installation, including running power leads, installing fuse panels, cable/fiber management, terminations, and grounding.
  • Good working knowledge of and comfort with DC power, including 48V DC power systems.
  • Basic understanding of data networking.
  • Safety conscious and detail oriented.
  • Effective computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office (Visio, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, SAP, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated technical documentation skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Analytical, abstract thinking, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to adhere to best practices, standards, and change management policies and procedures.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing workflow on a daily and hourly basis.
  • Reliable transportation capable of handling multiple terrains.
  • Possession of basic hand tools and safety shoes (specialty tools, test sets, laptop, and PPE provided).
  • Willingness to work overtime, including holidays and weekends as needed.
  • Bonus: Basic knowledge and hands‑on experience with single mode fiber optic cable.
  • Bonus: Detailed knowledge and hands‑on experience with DWDM and MPLS equipment.
