General Maintenance Technician I
- Department: Facility Services
- Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor
- FLSA Status: Hourly / Full-Time
- Schedule: Generally routine, but requires flexibility for evenings, weekends, and shared on-call emergency duty. Overtime may be required.
The General Maintenance Technician I assists with a variety of hands-on tasks encompassing most of the construction and building trades. This role requires basic technical troubleshooting skills, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to interact tactfully and courteously with co-workers, management, and clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Systems Maintenance: Assist in evaluating, repairing, and performing minor plumbing (toilets, urinals, sinks, faucets), electrical (switches, receptacles, lighting, breakers, ballasts), and HVAC tasks (filters, belts, basic PM).
- General Building Repair: Handle basic carpentry, drywall prep, painting, and structural repairs (windows, doors, walls).
- Work Order Management: Receive, execute, and complete work orders in a timely manner while keeping accurate records of materials and labor.
- Safety & Compliance: Follow all safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Proactively identify and fix potential safety hazards.
- Vendor & Fleet Support: Escort outside contractors or inspectors when needed; report complex issues to the supervisor. Maintain the company vehicle in good working order (refueling, logging monthly inspections).
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience in a commercial or residential maintenance role.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. A 1-year certificate from a technical school/college is a plus, but an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Technical Knowledge: Working knowledge of basic HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical systems.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work independently or as part of a team; must follow oral and written instructions and possess a customer-service mindset.
- Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach.
- Ability to safely carry, extend, and climb ladders.
- Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Note:
The work environment may occasionally expose the employee to infectious waste or diseases (including AIDS and Hepatitis
B). Noise levels are usually moderate.
