Job Overview

Marine Electrician II will perform ship repairs, modernization, and alteration installation projects as part of the Fleet Services Group in Norfolk, VA.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Inspect, repair, install, modify, and maintain electrical/electronic systems, circuits, and equipment.
  • Conduct on‑site field service for system groom and checkout, minor repairs, and configuration validation.
  • Set up, check, and correct operational and experimental electrical machinery and circuitry according to guidelines and specifications.
  • Assemble multi‑pin connectors, fiber‑optic connections, and other components.
  • Construct, adapt, or repair components, subunits, or simple models; diagnose malfunctions and provide cost‑effective solutions.
  • Perform mechanical alignments where required.
  • Read, interpret, and understand simple schematics and blueprints.
  • Inspect and test electrical systems and equipment to locate and diagnose malfunctions using visual inspection and testing devices.
  • Extract and compile engineering data, process data, identify errors, and select methods of data presentation.
  • Conduct tests or experiments that may require modifications in test setups or procedures; operate standard test equipment and record data.
  • Follow layout and scientific diagrams to construct and package simple devices and subunits.
  • Identify and recommend areas of concern to shop superintendent.
  • Lay out, pull, and splice wires; install and hook up lighting fixtures.
  • Label, test, and troubleshoot circuits.
  • Instruct helpers, apprentices, or less‑skilled electricians.
  • Proactively problem‑solve, write reports, and suggest solutions.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support production and project completion.
Requirements
  • Copper Connector Certified or possess fiber optic experience.
  • 4 to 5+ years of practical shipboard experience with HM&E systems and equipment.
  • Possess NAVSEA Cableway and Connectorization Certifications.
  • Technical expertise with power generation and transmission equipment, motorized valve actuators, PLCs, fiber optics, and integrated network system experience.
  • High school diploma, GED, or industrial school certificate.
  • Read, interpret, and understand simple schematics and blueprints.
  • Repair and replace cables and connectors.
  • Participate in installation and maintenance of AC and DC generators, switchboards, distribution panels, lighting, and alarm circuits.
  • Familiar with NAVSEA standard concepts, practices, and procedures in electrical repair, fabrication, and installation.
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain a SECRET clearance; ability to obtain DBIDS and access local shipyards and U.S. Navy bases.
  • Understand, read, and communicate in English.
  • Possess basic hand tools.
  • Pass an Audiogram, Respirator Fit Test, and physical exam.
  • Travel up to 25% may be required within and outside the continental United States.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified in Multi‑pin Connectors IAW MIL‑STD‑20035A (SA).
  • Certified in Fiber Optic CFOS/O, CFOS/C, CFOS/S, CFOS/T, CFOS/FC.
  • 4 to 5+ years of experience as a Marine Electrician.
  • Familiar with NAVSEA Standard Item requirements.
  • Certified to perform wire‑way inspections per NAVSEA Standard Items.
Physical Requirements
  • Exposure to open‑air environments, including noise, heat, and cold conditions.
  • Required to visit project sites aboard ships and rigs, onshore and offshore.
  • Must wear PPE (hearing, eye, head, hand protection) as required.
  • Site visits may involve standing on varied surfaces, bending, crouching, and climbing over obstructions.
  • Exposure to sound levels exceeding 100 decibels.
  • Must possess sufficient visual acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and night vision.
  • May work in confined spaces with limited ventilation.
  • Requires prolonged periods of sedentary work, sitting, or standing.
