Position: Electrician (1st Class)

1st Class Marine Electrician

We are seeking an experienced 1st Class Marine Electrician to perform advanced electrical work in a shipyard environment. This role involves troubleshooting, repairing, and installing shipboard electrical systems, as well as interpreting technical documentation and supporting cable installation on large vessels.

The ideal candidate brings strong electrical theory knowledge, hands‑on shipboard experience, and the ability to work independently while maintaining strict safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and work specifications
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose complex electrical issues using meters and diagnostic tools
  • Repair and refurbish shipboard systems, including lighting, communication and power distribution systems
  • Install and route cables through cableways and multi‑cable transits (MCTs)
  • Follow cable routing plans to ensure clean, organized and compliant installations
  • Test electrical systems to verify proper operation
  • Document work performed, including findings and recommendations
  • Order necessary materials and parts to complete jobs efficiently
  • Identify and report safety concerns or abnormal equipment conditions
  • Collaborate with other shipyard trades to meet project timelines
  • Maintain consistent attendance and adhere to all safety protocols
Required Qualifications
  • 6+ years of experience as a Marine Electrician (1st Class level)
  • Strong understanding of electrical theory and shipboard systems
  • Proven experience troubleshooting complex electrical systems
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics and technical documents
  • Hands‑on experience with cableways, MCTs, shipboard wiring and routing
  • Proficiency with electrical test equipment and meters
  • Ability to write clear and accurate work reports
  • Eligible to obtain DBIDS access
  • Ability to work in Portsmouth and surrounding shipyard locations
  • TWIC card or willingness to obtain (escort options available during processing)
  • Reliable attendance and strong work ethic
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience as a 2nd Class Electrician (4+ years) or 3rd Class Electrician (3+ years)
  • Experience with shipboard hook‑ups and terminations
  • Familiarity with structured cable routing systems
  • Prior work in shipyard or industrial marine environments
  • Stable work history demonstrating reliability

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Norfolk, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 – $28.00 per hour.
