Job Overview

We are seeking a Mechanic II to join our Fleet Services Group in Norfolk, VA, supporting a variety of ship repair, modernization, and Alteration Installation Team (AIT) projects. This position involves working aboard U.S. Navy and commercial vessels to install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex electrical systems in a dynamic maritime environment.

The ideal candidate will have some experience with shipboard electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, communications, control systems, and electronic equipment. Prior experience working on military or commercial vessels, especially in support of the U.S. Navy, is highly desirable.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist in performing removal, repair, modification, overhaul, and installation of machinery and equipment common to maritime vessels and general industry.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues using technical manuals, drawings, and diagnostic tools.
  • Apply knowledge of production processes to complete assignments efficiently and accurately.
  • Perform operational testing on installed equipment and systems.
  • Utilize troubleshooting techniques to identify and resolve equipment and machinery issues.
  • Conduct inspections to identify wear, damage, and required repairs.
  • Ensure all systems meet operational and safety standards prior to turnover.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Understand and utilize technical documents, work packages, and test procedures.
  • Document work performed and maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
  • Report to and brief supervisors and management on task status and progress.
  • Adhere to all company policies as well as OSHA and maritime safety regulations.
  • Support production schedules and project completion timelines.
  • Collaborate with team members and other trades to complete assignments.
  • Perform additional duties outside of your standard responsibilities as needed to support production and project completion.
Requirements
  • High school/trade or vocational degree.
  • Read, interpret, and understand simple schematics and blueprints.
  • Applicant must be familiar with NAVSEA, standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of basic electrical repair, fabrication, and installation.
  • Must have or have the ability to obtain a SECRET clearance and must be able to obtain DBIDS and be able to access local shipyards and U.S. Navy bases.
  • Must be able to understand, read, and communicate in English as required for job instructions, safety information, and team communication.
  • Must possess basic hand tools.
  • Must be able to pass an audiogram, respirator fit test, and physical.
  • Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States, up to 25% of the time.
Physical Requirements
  • Exposure to open-air environments, including noisy, hot, and cold conditions.
  • Required to visit project sites aboard ships and rigs, both onshore and offshore.
  • Must wear various types of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hearing, eye, head, and hand protection, as required.
  • Site visits may involve standing on a variety of surfaces and angles, bending, crouching, and climbing over obstructions such as scaffolding, ladders, and internal barge or boat structural components.
  • Exposure to sound levels exceeding 100 decibels.
  • Must possess sufficient visual acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and night vision to inspect marine components and systems, identify defects or irregularities, and safely operate tools and equipment.
  • May work in confined spaces with limited ventilation.
  • Requires prolonged periods of sedentary work, including sitting and/or standing.
  • May be required to operate machinery, power tools, and/or heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively to exchange and comprehend information.
  • Frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions, including high heat and extreme cold.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs. or more, depending on the task requirements.
  • Must be physically able to ride ships at sea for extended periods, including withstanding ship motion and working in various sea conditions.
