Summary
The position is located within the Mid‑Atlantic Region, Navy Facilities Engineering Command, Quality Recycling Program, Norfolk VA. The purpose of this position is to receive, identify, sort, and separate recyclables from non‑recyclables, properly dispose of non‑recyclable material, and document/prepare/transport recyclable materials in accordance with standard procedure.
ResponsibilitiesPerforms all or some of the following duties as assigned:
- Receives materials from customers, assists with pick‑up and delivery, and ensures proper receipt of materials.
- Separates recyclable material from non‑recyclable material in accordance with standard procedures.
- Places recyclable and non‑recyclable materials in proper storage and disposal areas and ensures “like” items are stored together for proper documentation.
- Identifies and reports any hazardous materials and assists with proper disposal.
- Loads, unloads vehicles, containers, etc. as directed and relocates stock, equipment, or materials.
- Makes runs to pick up recyclables or items on the installation, to other installations, or within the private sector as a Motor Vehicle Operator when assigned.
- Ensures the safe operation of all tools and equipment at all times, maintains cleanliness and order of work areas, and performs minor preventative maintenance and safety checks.
- Maintains cleanliness of assigned facility and surrounding grounds, including light maintenance such as minor repairs, replacement of fixtures, light bulbs, and operation of power tools/equipment such as lawnmower, weed cutter, and hand tools.
- Performs other recycling‑related duties as assigned.
- Must pass all applicable records and background check.
- Must successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check; any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
- Starting May 7 2025, non‑affiliated individuals requesting access will need a REAL‑‑compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to access CNRMA installations.
- Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 45 pounds without assistance, and higher weights with assistance.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license.

- NA04: Must have ability to identify facility layout, recyclable versus non‑recyclable materials, and types and locations of proper storage areas. Some prior recycling experience is preferred. Must have physical ability to bend, lift, load/unload heavy and/or bulky items, and follow basic instructions to work independently once trained. Must possess basic writing and math skills for documenting receipts, quantities, hazardous materials, and estimate quantities.
Must demonstrate skill in use of equipment such as electric balers, hydraulic jacks/lifts, forklifts, bobcat loaders, manual banding machines, and possess basic knowledge of hand tools. A driver’s license is strongly preferred. - NA05: A valid driver’s license is required and must be maintained at all times. A forklift license is strongly preferred. At this level, the incumbent may work with a wide range of recyclable items and is responsible for knowledge of proper storage, handling, and dispensation of each type.
This position does not have a positive education requirement.
