Position: Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Engineering Technician III - V) with Security Clearance

Overview

Full-Time, Non-Exempt.

Location:

Naval Station Norfolk, VA. SA-TECH is a DoD contractor specializing in range operations and maintenance, weapons testing, facilities management, targets O&M, engineering support, systems integration, electronics, communications, and growing cybersecurity. We support multiple DoD programs and operate a dozen active test and/or training ranges. We are seeking a Heavy Vehicle and Mobile Equipment Service Technician for CCD at Naval Station Norfolk.

The technician will be responsible for preventative maintenance, service, repair, troubleshooting, and testing of forklifts, trailers, and other heavy equipment. All work is performed safely in accordance with industry standards and best practices.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect and diagnose equipment:
    Conduct thorough inspections of heavy equipment to identify potential issues and ensure proper functioning. Use diagnostic tools and software to pinpoint problems with mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Complete repair and maintenance:
    Repair or replace worn and damaged components (engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic and electrical systems); perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues:
    Diagnose and troubleshoot problems, understanding how different systems work together, often using specialized tools.
  • Operate and test equipment:
    Operate and test equipment after repairs to ensure proper functioning and make necessary adjustments.
  • Maintain accurate records:
    Complete detailed paperwork and maintain logs of repairs, maintenance performed, and parts used.
  • Communicate with stakeholders:
    Communicate with equipment owners, operators, and colleagues to understand needs, explain repairs, provide recommendations, and ensure smooth operations.
  • Adhere to safety protocols:
    Follow all safety protocols and regulations when working with heavy machinery.
Work Conditions
  • May require work on first shift ) or second shift ).
  • Work will be performed inside and outside; activities include sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and reaching.
  • Position requires physical dexterity and strength to work on large equipment.
Education / Experience / Skills
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; post-secondary certificate or associate degree in a relevant field (diesel technology or heavy equipment mechanics) preferred.
  • U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, OEM, or related trade school training preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of heavy equipment repair experience (level depends on direct experience).
  • Ability to read, write, and follow technical directives.
  • Preferred: OEM certifications; familiarity with MTU, Cummins, Caterpillar, or Steyr Diesel engines; CDL with clean driving record.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of heavy equipment systems (engines, hydraulics, electrical, transmissions, brakes).
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and software; comfort with computerized testing equipment.
  • Physical strength and dexterity for lifting parts and working in awkward positions.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and repair small craft trailers, transporters, and prime movers.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to identify root causes and effective solutions.
  • Attention to detail and thorough record-keeping.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with clients, supervisors, and team members.
  • Current Driver’s License; able to be insured under company vehicle policy for driving work/government/rental vehicles.
  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance.
  • Background screening required (SSN, driving record, criminal background).
