Electrical & Electronic Maintenance Technician
Essential Job Functions
Hampton Roads Transit seeks a customer‑service oriented individual to install, maintain, repair and replace overhead lines, supporting structures, signal and communications equipment, and facility electrical and mechanical systems along the entire light rail alignment. Responsibilities include maintaining outlet lighting, rail switch machines, high/low voltage switch gear, HVAC, plumbing, fire detection and prevention systems; performing LRT systems maintenance, inspections, and remedial actions;
coordinating with contractors; delivering maintenance training; assisting rail operations as needed; performing scheduled and preventive maintenance on electric bus charging stations; maintaining cleanliness of work areas; and responding to emergency service needs.
- Execute maintenance activities while adhering to OEM standards and safety procedures.
- Inspect overhead contact wire systems, traction power substations, electrical/mechanical facilities, signals, and communications; submit verbal and written reports.
- Recommend and execute immediate remedial actions to maintain safe, efficient, and reliable LRT service.
- Monitor, identify and correct imminent safety hazards across the rail system; investigate and recommend solutions for potential safety problems.
- Coordinate with contracted efforts, assist contractors, and review work performance for acceptance or rejection.
- Develop and deliver maintenance training to employees on safe performance of maintenance tasks and operation of required equipment.
- Assist rail operations when required by operating substation, signal communications, and other LRT support equipment.
- Operate on‑track equipment and maintenance machinery as required.
- Maintain accurate records in compliance with HRT Records Management Policies.
- Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Problem analysis, troubleshooting, and repair of LRT equipment, including electronic, microcomputer, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric components.
- Interpretation of electronic schematics, electrical and electromechanical diagrams, construction plans, and specifications.
- Use of test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, and wire tracers.
- Knowledge of high/low voltage switch‑gear repair, traction power theory, substation operations, signal and facility power distribution.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, internet, and HRT Enterprise Asset Management and Enterprise Resource Planning systems.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, manage multiple priorities, and work effectively in a team environment.
- Associates Degree or Vocational Training certificate in electronic or electrical technology with a Journeymen electrician license and a minimum of 2 years directly related experience;
- High School Diploma or GED with six years of related industry or trade experience, or six years of recent rail vehicle technician experience;
- Journeyman/Lineman electrical trade experience or equivalent.
- CDL Class B license or permit; must obtain a valid Virginia CDL Class B license with air brake and passenger endorsements within 60 days of employment.
- Pass HRT skills assessment with a minimum 80% score per segment; complete Rail Track Equipment Training/Certification Program and rail vehicle equipment training; demonstrate proficiency in light rail vehicle operation.
- Perform heavy manual labor, lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally with assistance.
- Work at heights with proper safety equipment.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; meet hearing requirement of 0–20dB.
- May be required to work weekends and holidays.
