Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for a Waterworks Operator in our Water Production Division. This person performs duties associated with operating a water treatment plant, maintaining and operating equipment to filter and maintain water pressure, and performing various tests to ensure the safety of water.
- Operate the plant by conducting chemical tests and making adjustments, performing maintenance on plant and equipment, maintaining logs and equipment records, monitoring personnel entering or leaving the plant, and resolving problems.
- Monitor filtration by adjusting filters to match incoming water, monitoring turbidity and head loss, and running them through a cleaning process.
- Monitor water pressure by adjusting pumps to keep pressure within specifications while maintaining proper levels in tanks.
Waterworks Operator I –
Department Hiring Range: $48,666.12 – $55,845.49
Waterworks Operator II –
Department Hiring Range: $51,099.42 – $58,637.76
Waterworks Operator III –
Department Hiring Range: $53,654.39 – $61,569.65
Waterworks Operator IV –
Department Hiring Range: $56,337.11 – $64,648.13
- Waterworks Operator I:
High school diploma or GED (no experience required). Must pass Waterworks Operator Class IV License examination within two years of hire and must pass Waterworks Operator Class III License examination within two years following receipt of a Class IV License. - Waterworks Operator II
:
High school diploma or GED. One year of experience. Must hold a Waterworks Operator Class III License and pass the Class II examination within two years of classification. - Waterworks Operator III
:
High school diploma or GED. Two years of experience. Must hold a Waterworks Operator Class II License and pass the Class I examination within two years of classification. - Waterworks Operator IV
:
High school diploma or GED. Three years of experience. Must hold a Waterworks Operator Class I License.
Must hold a Waterworks Operator Class I License.
Work Hours3 days on, 3 days off; 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. (hours subject to change). The position is designated as Essential and may require extended, rotating, after‑hours, weekend, and/or holiday shifts in response to emergencies and severe weather.
Work Location6040 Waterworks Road, Norfolk, Virginia 23502. The employee may also be required to work at 3719 Parker Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia 23508 as needed.
