Food Service Equipment Mechanic

Plans, coordinates, and supervises installation, maintenance, repairs, and scheduled replacements of the department of School Nutrition's food service equipment and cafeteria tables. Performs a variety of skilled, master's level tasks associated with those tasks. Provides technical advice and production assistance when necessary and inspects all major projects. Develops and refines the work routine of assigned personnel and contractors. Carries assignments through to completion.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Coordinator of Trades and Facilities Management in conjunction with the Senior Director of School Nutrition. Incumbents are responsible for the efficient, timely, and economical accomplishment of work assigned to level I, level II, and level III trades personnel classifications and contractors.

Position reflects the master's level of the Food Service Equipment Mechanic trades series. Supervisory and maintenance tasks are performed in the central kitchen and in school kitchens operated by the department of School Nutrition. Incumbent supervises the day-to-day operations of crews and contractors within established policies and guidelines and is responsible for the efficient, timely, and economical accomplishment of assigned work and evaluation of staff.

The individual assigned to this classification may occasionally be required to work evenings or be on call evenings or weekends to respond to emergencies.

Completion of high school, including or supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship training and considerably and progressively more responsible experience in the trade, some of which shall have been at the masters level, or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability. Experience working in a large-scale, commercial food service environment is preferred.

Possession of an appropriate, valid automotive vehicle operator's license approved and accepted by The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Manufacturer certifications to repair specific equipment as necessary; obtains State of Virginia Type 60 Pesticide Applicator Certificate and FOG Certification within six months after hire.

Plans distribution of work; assigns tasks or projects; explains work requirements and methods to subordinates as needed and keeps them informed on changes in policy and procedure. Oversees the performance of contractors and assists in the development of trades related systems for new buildings; inspects new buildings for discrepancies at walk through.

Reviews work in progress for compliance with departmental performance and safety standards and provides assistance when problems arise.

Uses software and/or web-based tools daily to retrieves and prioritizes work orders. Responds to emails generated by classified employees as well as administrators and takes appropriate action to resolve complaints.

Coordinates work with other affected shops as required; follows up to ensure that work is completed properly and in a reasonable amount of time.

Performs journey or master level skilled trades tasks in the field to which assigned as required.

Makes cost estimates as required; identifies needs for new and replacement equipment; approves orders for parts and materials; approves payment of invoices; assesses new vendors and products; maintains and reports on staff time and attendance.

Enters requisitions and receivers into MUNIS ERP. Codes and reconciles credit card purchases. Investigates and resolves discrepancies in billing statements. Manages accounts payable to contractors and vendors.

Schedules and approves leave; takes informal and recommends formal corrective action on complaints, conduct, or performance problems; evaluates performance of subordinates; provides for training and cross-training of subordinates; initiates requests for tools, parts, and equipment; maintains records; participates in review and improvement of work methods; and participates in employee selection and promotion activities.

Coordinates the installation and repair of gas and electric kitchen appliances and control devices, including kitchen hood systems, food truck, and School Nutrition's indoor hydroponic gardens.

Possesses high-level knowledge of complex, integrated electrical and natural gas systems in order to troubleshoot, test, repair, calibrate, maintain or modify commercial food service equipment including, but not limited to, electronic and electric controls, gas, steam and hot water plumbing, valves, thermostats, steam assemblies, electric motors, switches, wet wells, conveyors, air pressure, chilled water, conveyor, high pressure hydraulic and ventilation systems.
