Coho Technology Solutions is seeking a skilled Welder to support shipboard maintenance, repair, fabrication, and modernization efforts in Norfolk, Virginia. The Welder performs complex welding and metal fabrication assignments involving a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals using manual, gas, electric arc, inert gas shielded, plasma arc, and other approved welding processes. The successful candidate will fabricate, repair, modify, and install structural components, piping systems, pressure vessels, and equipment while ensuring all work meets applicable engineering drawings, military specifications, industry standards, and quality assurance requirements.
This position requires a highly skilled journeyman-level welder capable of performing precision welding in all positions with minimal supervision.
- Perform welding, fabrication, modification, and repair of structural steel, piping systems, pressure vessels, machinery, and equipment using a variety of welding processes.
- Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, sketches, and work orders to determine project requirements and welding procedures.
- Select appropriate welding equipment, electrodes, filler materials, shielding gases, and welding techniques based on material type and project specifications.
- Perform Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick), Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), oxy-fuel cutting, brazing, plasma cutting, and other approved welding methods.
- Weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper alloys, and other dissimilar metals.
- Perform welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead, and confined-space positions.
- Prepare materials through measuring, cutting, grinding, beveling, fitting, tack welding, and alignment prior to final welding.
- Perform flame cutting, heat treating, pre-heating, post-weld heat treatment, bending, forming, and finishing operations as required.
- Fabricate components using templates, fixtures, jigs, and precision measuring instruments.
- Weld pressure vessels, high-temperature steam systems, water piping, and structural assemblies requiring complete weld penetration and fusion.
- Inspect completed welds to verify compliance with engineering drawings, welding procedures, military specifications, and applicable quality standards.
- Maintain tools, welding equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
- Follow all OSHA, NAVSEA, shipyard, and company safety procedures while properly utilizing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

- Education and Certifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Required Experience and Skills
- Journeyman-level welding experience in industrial, marine, shipyard, manufacturing, or heavy fabrication environments
- Demonstrated proficiency performing:
- Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG)
- Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG)
- Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick)
- Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
- Oxy-Acetylene Welding and Cutting
- Plasma Arc Cutting
- Experience welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals of varying thicknesses, including dissimilar metals
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, engineering drawings, and technical specifications
- Experience welding pressure vessels, piping systems, structural steel, or heavy industrial equipment
- Ability to use precision measuring instruments, welding gauges, templates, and layout tools
- Strong knowledge of welding safety procedures and industry best practices
- Current AWS Certified Welder (CW) certification
- Experience supporting U.S. Navy ship repair, shipbuilding, or NAVSEA maintenance contracts
- Experience working in shipyards or maritime industrial environments
- OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification
- Experience performing welds requiring radiographic (RT), magnetic particle (MT), dye penetrant (PT), ultrasonic (UT), or pressure testing
- Ability to obtain and maintain base access
- Thorough understanding of welding metallurgy and fabrication techniques
- Ability to determine appropriate welding procedures for a wide variety of metals and applications
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality workmanship
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to manage multiple assignments while meeting production schedules.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to perform overhead welding and work in awkward positions for extended periods
