A day in this role

You step aboard a naval or commercial vessel in the Norfolk shipyard just after sunrise. With drawings in hand, you map routes for high- and low-pressure lines, mark your cuts, and begin fitting spools and supports. By midday, valves and flanges are aligned to spec, and by afternoon you’re pressure-testing the system, logging results, and coordinating with welders and electricians so the next trade can move in.

Safety checks bookend every task.

What you’ll handle

Layout, cut, fit, and install piping for high/low pressure and hydraulic systems aboard vessels.

Fabricate pipe spools and supports from blueprints and engineering drawings.

Install valves, fittings, flanges, and associated components.

Conduct hydrostatic and leak testing; document outcomes.

Read and interpret isometrics, P&IDs, and technical specifications.

Sequence work with adjacent trades for smooth installations.

Maintain accurate material usage and completion records.

Apply shipyard safety procedures and quality standards at all times.

What you bring3+ years of pipe fitting experience; shipyard/marine background preferred.

Hands-on skill with cutting, threading, and fitting tools.

Fluency in blueprint reading, including isometric drawings.

High school diploma or GED.Ability to support overtime, weekends, and extended schedules as needed.

Valid, clean driving record.

Willingness to participate in pre-employment screenings.

How do you confirm alignment and fit-up before welding or final assembly? Which tools and equipment are you most proficient with? Walk us through your process for hydrostatic or pneumatic testing. Describe a complex install you completed and how you overcame challenges.

How do you verify compliance with specifications before sign-off? What safety controls are critical in tight shipboard spaces? How do you prioritize when multiple systems are in progress? How do you raise clashes or design issues with supervisors or engineers?
