Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Recreation seeks knowledgeable full-time lifeguards to ensure a safe swimming environment for aquatic facility patrons at assigned swimming pools and open water facilities. Other duties may include instructing swimming lessons and water fitness classes; assisting with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of aquatic programs; and planning daily activities of the pool and general swimming pool operations.

Essential Functions- Ensure the safety of swimmers and facility patrons using American Red Cross Lifeguarding standards and RPOS Aquatic Division standards of care.
- Utilize preventative lifeguarding skills, enforce facility rules, perform site safety inspections, perform rescues, administer medical aid/CPR/the use of AED and emergency oxygen as needed.
- Complete required documentation and perform maintenance at pools, waterfronts and/or beaches. Assist with the implementation of daily aquatic programs, activities, events and assist with operations of facility.
- Use site‑specific emergency medical and rescue equipment for swimming pools, beaches and/or waterfronts.
- Assist in managing facility operations including testing of pool chemistry, completing documentation, cleaning duties, facility maintenance, and perform other related duties as directed.
- Perform pool reception duties, program promotion, and registration duties as required. Follow management directives and comply with standards of operation as required by management.
Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.
Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s)Valid driver’s license depending on assignment; current Red Cross Lifeguard Training or YMCA Lifeguard Training Certificate; current CPR Certification (CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer); current First Aid Certification and level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.
Additional Information & RequirementsSuccessful completion of a swimming competency, job knowledge examination, and water rescue skills screening is required.
Work LocationVarious City of Norfolk Pools and Oceanfront.
Work HoursHours scheduled between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM; flexible hours will apply.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre‑tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre‑tax payroll deduction. - The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self‑development and education. Permanent full‑time and permanent part‑time classified, unclassified permanent, full‑time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
