Recreation Specialist - Fitness

Job Summary

The City of Norfolk Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking a Recreational Specialist responsible for developing and implementing fitness programs, leading exercise classes, and promoting overall wellness. The role includes facility oversight, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for participants, and facilitating community engagement for healthy lifestyles.

• Provide personal training and/or group fitness classes (where applicable)
• Responsible for cleaning all fitness equipment and reporting maintenance when necessary
• Enforce facility rules and regulations
• Lead and implement fitness programs, including assessments and orientations
• Provide tours to prospective members, informing them of facilities, programs, and amenities
• Complete daily cleaning, patron utilization, and equipment checks
• Check members into the facility using Rec‑Trac Recreation Software
• Provide top‑notch customer service in person and via phone
• Provide programming for kids ages 5‑14 for the NFWC’s Youth Fit programs
• Manage daily operations of the facility, including patron monitoring, client scheduling, maintenance, and security
• Supervise subordinates and work effectively in a team environment
• Supervise the fitness floor to ensure patrons are using equipment properly

• At least one year of experience
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to obtain CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications within six months
• Personal trainer certification and/or group fitness certification or equivalent

Work Location: Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center, 7300 Newport Ave, Norfolk, VA 23505

Work Hours: Monday – Friday 6:00 a.m.–8:30 p.m., Saturday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Department Starting Salary: $42,629
