Definition

This is skilled work that involves the safe and prompt transfer and delivery of prepared and unprepared foods to Norfolk City Public School cafeterias, satellite locations, and other school-sponsored events. Delivery may involve an established route requiring delivery within a specific time frame. Work requires the safe operation of an assigned truck and knowledge of roads located in the city of Norfolk and surrounding areas.

Employees in this classification may transport items to other locations outside of Norfolk when requested, pick up, transfer, or deliver the assigned items; and complete the related paperwork. Work requires the employee to perform minor maintenance on food service carts and vehicles. Daily contact is maintained with school cafeteria staff, principals, Norfolk Public School employees, the public and others while performing essential functions.

Supervision

The incumbent works under the general supervision of the School Nutrition Department Supervisor. Assignments are given orally or in writing and through route directions. Additional guidance is provided through Norfolk Public School rules, regulations, and guidelines. Work is reviewed through performance appraisals for adherence to established policies and procedures. Employees in this classification may assist in the training of new drivers.

No supervision is exercised over others.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Employees in this classification pick up, sort, and deliver items for the Nutrition Center. Types of trucks may vary in size and weight.

Essential Functions of the Class (may not include all duties performed by each position in the class.)

Drives truck to deliver and/or pick up assigned items at various locations within and outside of the school system such as canned goods, frozen food products, non-perishable foods and supplies; operates truck hydraulic lift and hand trucks.

Reviews daily load sheets; counts, verifies, sorts and organizes items to prepare for delivery; loads items onto truck; maps out and drives shortest route between delivery locations; unloads and obtains proper signatures on delivery tickets; compares counts to ticket information; secures and sorts items picked up for delivery; returns empty carts and other items to the Nutrition Center/Warehouse.

Completes and submits daily delivery reports showing items delivered and routes traveled.

May assist in unloading incoming cargo from other trucks.

Inspects truck routinely; ensures that routine preventive maintenance is performed on assigned truck; washes truck.

Prepares truck for next day delivery; retrieves mail, packages, boxes, etc., from the other drivers.

Performs miscellaneous duties in the warehouse as needed, including assisting clerks with shipping and receiving functions.

Performs minor repairs on food carts; changes brakes and wheels; tightens bolts; greases joints.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of local streets and road systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to operate and maneuver a large truck into narrow driveways in a safe manner.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, and organize information into standard reports.
  • Ability to perform routine and minor maintenance procedures on trucks and food carts.
  • Ability to safely handle heavy equipment and time-sensitive supplies.
  • Ability to drive in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate large trucks varying in size and weight, a hand truck, lift gate, forklift, manual and electric hand jack, food carts, refrigeration unit, tie-down straps, holding bars for food carts, hand tools, truck radio, pallet jack, beeper, telephone, dollies, and other essential tools.
