Equipment Operator III – Wastewater Division
The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified applicants to operate equipment in our Wastewater Division. The role involves driving various types of equipment to and from job sites, transporting crew, and performing routine maintenance on vehicles.
Essential Functions- Operate construction and wastewater system maintenance equipment such as backhoes, jet/vactor cleaners, trenchers, and dump trucks.
- Transport heavy equipment, supplies, and materials to job sites.
- Perform safety checks, maintenance, and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
- Assist with loading/unloading materials, job site tasks, and maintaining clean equipment and work areas.
- Lift up to 75 lbs, climb, stand, pull, bend, stoop throughout portions of the work day.
- High school diploma or equivalent; four years of high school education.
- At least two years of experience as an Equipment Operator; underground utility system experience preferred.
- Valid driver's license; CDL required. CDL with Tanker endorsement may be required within six months of hire, depending on assignment.
- Class A Commercial Driver's License preferred.
- Good physical fitness and ability to lift, climb, and bend.
Pre‑employment testing on the operation of equipment may be required. The desired candidate will possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License.
Work LocationCombined Operations, 1316 Ballentine Blvd.
Work HoursMonday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; standby duty rotation may be required.
Compensation & BenefitsThis position is eligible for a one‑time $5,000 signing bonus and is designated as an ‘Essential’ position. Employees may work extended, rotating, on‑call, nights, weekends, and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather. Regular full‑time employees receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, a pension plan, basic life insurance, medical and dental enrollment, Section 457 deferred compensation, long‑term disability, and other benefits as governed by City regulations.
Temporary/seasonal and part‑time employees receive employer‑provided parking and credit‑union membership.
All employees hired after January 1, 2022, contribute 5% of salary toward the Virginia Retirement System. Tuition Assistance is available to permanent full‑time and part‑time employees who have completed six months of continuous service and attend an accredited institution.
