Material Handling Position

Full-Time and Permanent; 7.5 Hours/Day; 252 Days/Year; 12 Months/Year;
Grade DD

This position is material handling work for the department of School Nutrition and includes a variety of routine tasks which may include heavy, repetitive physical duties. Work is performed in kitchens, dry storage areas, and in large freezers and refrigerators. An employee in this classification is responsible for the efficient storage and distribution of School Nutrition food, supplies, and equipment. Work involves receiving, storing, and issuing stock and nonstock items.

Work also involves sorting, counting, inspecting, and submitting proper paperwork for data entry and inventory control. Work requires the operation of a pallet jack, forklift, and other material handling equipment. Work includes assisting School Nutrition Delivery Drivers with loading and unloading food, supplies, and equipment at schools and other locations served by the Department of School Nutrition. Employees in this position will have frequent contact with delivery drivers and others and must be able to communicate effectively.

Supervision

The employee works under the general supervision of the Warehouse Supervisor and/or the Distribution Supervisor. Assignments are performed independently and in conjunction with other positions. Additional guidance is provided through Norfolk Public Schools Rules and Regulation, the Classified Personnel Handbook, and departmental policies and procedures. Work is reviewed through an annual inventory, observation, and performance appraisals for adherence to established policies and procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Employees in this classification work in a large central warehouse which includes refrigeration, freezer, and dry storage areas. They are responsible for receiving, storing, and issuing food, supplies and equipment. Employees must safely operate material handling equipment.

Essential Functions (May not include all duties performed by each in the class.)

  • Receives and stores incoming items; issues out-going items; maintains stock, non-stock, and equipment in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Assists with loading and unloading of delivery trucks; signs for shipments; completes receiving reports; obtains a description of items received and the classification number; completes a Damage Report form on all damaged items; checks items received and compares to purchase order as to quantity, quality, description, and inspection certificate as applicable; returns all paperwork to the receiving office in a timely manner.

    Responsible for checking and recording temperatures of all food products received in compliance with HACCP regulations.
  • Stores food, supplies, and equipment in their proper location; rotates stock in accordance with first-in, first out procedures (FIFO).
  • Issues inventory as directed in pick tickets, hand receipts, and emergency requisitions.
  • Prepares and organizes supply deliveries for the Delivery Driver. Assists with material handling during deliveries as needed.
  • Operates motorized forklift, manual and motorized pallet jacks, hand truck, pallet chain pulley; communication devices and delivery truck to perform essential functions.
  • Assists with spot-checks and semi-annual physical inventory of food, supplies and equipment; counts and tallies items; discusses stock related problems.
  • Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of warehousing operations including shipping, receiving, and material handling.
  • Ability to read and write effectively.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Good math and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to safely operate material handling equipment.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Requirements

High school education and some experience in warehouse operations; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skills, and abilities.

License/Certification

A valid VA Driver's License in good standing is not a requirement of the position but is preferred. Forklift Certification must be obtained within the fifteen-week probationary period. Norfolk Public Schools will provide the required training at no cost to the employee.
