Job Summary

All graduate assistants are required to enroll in a major ensemble appropriate to their applied area every semester they hold an assistantship. The ensemble placement will be determined by audition in the primary applied area.

The majority of the graduate teaching assistant's primary duties are in support of instruction, including but not limited to the responsibilities below:

  • Serve as a primary or secondary teaching instructor in a class or laboratory.
  • Assist a faculty member with teaching‑related tasks.
  • Grade student assignments which require knowledge of subjects taught in a class or laboratory.
  • Meet with and/or tutor students, hold office hours, prepare instructional materials, and assist during class and/or lab, etc.
  • For this position, the specific Teaching Assistant duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Classroom teaching in Music Theory.
  • Tutoring undergraduates and/or graduates.
  • Other duties as assigned, depending on the candidate's interests and experience and School of Music needs.
  • Salary Rate / Pay Rate

    $755.00 per month

  • Must be a degree‑seeking graduate student in the School of Music at Illinois State University.
  • For teaching assistant positions, state law mandates demonstrable oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position.

    Special Instructions for Applicants

    Although an audition on your primary applied instrument is not required for admission, it is required for consideration for this position. All graduate assistants are required to enroll in a major ensemble appropriate to their applied area every semester that they hold an assistantship. Audition information can be found at .

    Priority consideration will be given to candidates who complete the admission application process by January 15 and the audition process by February 15. A Graduate Music Theory Proficiency Exam will also be administered to determine eligibility/suitability for this position.

    Your admission materials, applied audition, and proficiency exam results will be used to evaluate your eligibility/suitability for this position.

    You must be eligible for employment in the United States and at Illinois State University and/or for the number of hours required for the position.

    Illinois State University student employees are restricted to no more than 28 hours per week of on‑campus employment for all positions held. International students are restricted by their visa status to no more than 20 hours per week of on‑campus employment when the university is in session but may work up to 28 hours per week when the university is not in session.
