Job Summary

The students in this position will assist in the hiring process of tutors. The Student Assistant assists in providing service to local families, working with school districts and after-school programs to identify students in need of program support.

Duties include matching the availability of tutors along with the specific tutoring skills needed, assisting in compiling annual statistics that are provided to the Center for Civic Engagement and to the Provost Office in support of their annual report. Students with experience with Microsoft Excel to create and update complex spreadsheets are desired.

Other duties include assisting with administrative tasks for payroll processing each pay period and outreach by phone or email to parents and teachers to validate the hours submitted and ensuring accurate submission of the tutors’ time.

Students in this position must be mature. A high level of responsibility is required as well as excellent customer service skills. A thorough understanding of the ARAC program and the impact that tutors make in the community is key.

Student Assistants will need the ability to perform tasks with limited supervision, have attention to detail and remain organized for this position. The person in this position is an integral part of tutor scheduling and documentation of processes.

Tutoring locations include the Illinois State University campus, local schools, public libraries, community centres, and after-school programs and the Student Assistant must understand and be prepared to work in a dynamic environment.

The program assistant will monitor weekly posts in the tutor "group chat" website with the remaining hours spent completing administrative tasks.

Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply.

Student Assistants will also perform other duties as assigned.

Pay Rate

$16/hour - $18/hour

Required Qualifications
  • Federal Work Study is required.
  • Degree seeking graduate or undergraduate student at Illinois State University
  • Experience with working with children (tutoring and/or mentoring).
  • Professional oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and ability to learn the ISU Student Information System.
  • Ability to provide your own transportation for off-campus sites.
Preferred Qualifications
  • The preferred applicant will be accepted to or pursuing one of the following degree programs:
    Communication Sciences and Disorders, Education (all plans), Family and Consumer Science, Human Development, Nurse Practitioner Psychology, and the Social Work/School Social Work program.
  • The preferred applicant will be able to apply complex regulations and adjust to new tasks.
  • Candidates with bilingual skills (fluency in Spanish) are also preferred. Student assistants with these skills will be expected to assist with in-person, email and phone communication with Spanish speaking families as well as translation of documents as needed.
  • Ability to provide your own transportation for off-campus sites.
  • Experience working with children (tutoring or mentoring).
Work Hours

This position can be 28, 20, or 10 hours/week depending on need each term.

  • The work hours are those in the posting for this position:
    Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. The Program Coordinator will create/update this schedule to meet the needs of the program. Schedules will not conflict with students’ class/program commitments.
