Role SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled Metrology Engineer to serve as the technical lead for our dimensional inspection and measurement strategies. This is not a "lab-only" role; we are looking for a proactive problem-solver who uses advanced metrology tools to diagnose and resolve complex manufacturing issues directly on the production floor. You will be responsible for creating high-level programming, mentoring junior technicians, and representing the metrology department on high-stakes, multi-disciplinary projects.
This role will report to the Sr. Process Engineering Manager on site at our Normal IL facility.
Create and maintain automated, production-ready programs for dimensionally inspecting parts and assemblies using Zeiss Calypso Software.
Dimensionally inspect parts using a variety of metrology equipment including vision systems, CMM and 3D laser (Hexagon Romer) and blue light scanners.
Support the development of methods to analyze product and process quality.
Analyze data to define trends, capability, and functional improvements.
Work together with relevant teams and departments to understand the needs regarding problem-solving.
Formulate a strategic plan to develop systems and metrics that increase productivity in the business.
Develop novel methods to accurately and precisely measure automotive components and assemblies.
Accurately read and interpret drawings and CATIA CAD models.
Lead standardization and optimization of production measurement methods and techniques
Assist in the creation and maintenance of operational documentation.
Improve product/process quality by defining/implementing recommendations for improvements of the current state.
Perform other functions as required.
Potential business travel to support product/process/system development at Rivian company locations
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Technology or related field
5+ years of experience working in a manufacturing environment
Develop, validate, and incorporate Calypso programming for Drive Unit/Battery assemblies/ Machining components
Program, set up, and operate Zeiss Calypso inspection systems.
Demonstrated proficiency utilizing surface plates, sine plates, and height stands (including compound angles)
Analyze measurement data against process or design limits, assess trends, and take appropriate actions.
Optimize inspection methods to expedite Calypso inspections and manage cells and equipment capacity.
Demonstrated high proficiency in programming Zeiss Calypso, utilizing PCM and macros.
Demonstrated problem-solving skills and comfortable moving between a quiet lab environment and a fast-paced, high-pressure production floor.
Excellent knowledge of GD&T with a deep understanding of Six Degrees of Freedom (6
DOF); must be able to explain and apply degree constraints for planes, circles, slots, and cylinders.Influence - Capable of persuading engineering and maintenance teams to take specific corrective actions based on measurement evidence.
Experience with CATIA or similar CAD software for design.
Manufacturing/assembly experience with a focus on one or more of the following areas:
Drivetrain castings/gears, Battery modules, Aerospace assemblies.
The salary range for this role is $78,200-$97,700 per hour for Illinois based applicants. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.
