Description:

The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated timeframe.

The RN provides care to these patients through the utilization of the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial and human resources.

The RN performs all responsibilities and duties required by the unit as specific to the scope of service.

The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice.

The RN maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided.

This documentation assures the integration of information for use by the healthcare team.

The RN completes an initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care.

The plan of care is in accordance with unit standards and based on patient and family needs.

The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures.

The RN modifies the plan of care based on continuous evaluation.

The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents.

The RN communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues.

The RN offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers.

The RN confers with colleagues to expand their knowledge base.

The RN identifies their own learning needs and takes the initiative to begin appropriate solutions.

The RN fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies.

The RN prepares the Operating Room suite for patients, including supplies, equipment, medications, and other needs.

The RN interviews patients by utilizing two identifiers.

The RN transports patients to the appropriate Operating Room suite and onto the Operating Room table using safety precautions.

The RN performs timeouts upon entry of the suite, prior to incision, and prior to exiting the Operating Room suite.

The RN appropriately positions and preps patients for procedures utilizing positional aids and guidelines.

The RN supports the surgical team during the procedure by responding to requests from the team for extra supplies, blood, specimens, cultures, and other medications.

The RN transports patients to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit or specific unit and provides a handoff to the receiving RN.
