Position Description
Ryder is hiring a Diesel Technician Trainee in Normal, IL. The role provides stable employment with weekly pay, excellent benefits, and a clear path for advancement. Candidates receive paid training while working toward a career as a Ryder Diesel Mechanic Technician.
Key details:
- Hourly Pay: $24.96 per hour
- Certification Bonus: up to $700 for new ASE certifications
- Quarterly Bonus: up to $500 per quarter (four times per year)
- Schedule:
Monday–Friday; weekends OFF - Hours:
7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (first shift)

- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)
- Zero to one year of mechanical experience with diesel engines (preferred)
- Minimum age 18
- English written and verbal communication skills

- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems quickly
- Independent and team work skills
- Professional representation of Ryder to employees and customers
- Time‑management and prioritization skills
- Track record of good attendance
- Personal accountability and a proven record of results
- Basic computer skills;
Microsoft Office experience - Basic knowledge of shop equipment and maintenance (preferred)
- Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A (preferred)
- DOT safety‑regulated and safety‑sensitive position; minimum age and hours determined by state law
- Obtain CDL within six months of hire
- Pass Ryder drug test
- Pass DOT physical
- Pass Ryder road test
- Pass Ryder background and motor‑vehicle check (including drug and alcohol verification from previous employers for the last three years)
- Move, wash, and service heavy‑duty vehicles; fuel and maintain vehicles, including diesel, natural gas, and hybrid; record fuel activity and inventory
- Perform multi‑point inspections on inbound units (tire pressure, fluid levels, lights, refrigeration units, etc.) and report issues to the shop
- Maintain fuel island area to Six Sigma standards; assist with facility maintenance and minor tasks as assigned
- Complete all Technician Training Development Program requirements and assessments (hands‑on and online training)
- Program modules:
Service Island Training, Vehicle Fueling and Washing, Environmental Safety & Spill Response, Safe Driving, 6S Standards, Technician I (Preventive Maintenance, Tires & Wheels, Service Bay Tools) and Technician II (HD Electrical, Air & Hydraulic Brakes), plus other duties as assigned
