Shift: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent. Five (5) years of experience in the residential and commercial building and construction industry or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications

Must obtain an Oklahoma State Provisional Inspector's License within thirty (30) days after employment;
State of Oklahoma residential building inspector license within 6 months, State of Oklahoma residential electrical, plumbing and mechanical inspector license within 18 months after employment; and State of Oklahoma Building unlimited inspector licenses within 12 months after employment. Must possess a valid state driver's license and satisfactory motor vehicle record.

Knowledge

Applicable City codes and regulations as they relate to plumbing, electrical, mechanical and building construction, etc. Methods, materials, and techniques in building construction, electrical, plumbing/fuel gas, heating, air conditioning/refrigeration, etc. Strong working familiarity with the International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, International Fuel Gas Code and National Electric Code preferred. Familiar with basic construction site safety protocols, construction terminology and safe work practices.

Skills

Effective oral and written communications, including the interpersonal skills required to deliver such communications in a positive manner. Inspecting the work of others and identifying defects or errors. Exercising good technical judgment in the inspection situation. Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with the general public and co-workers. Dealing with the public firmly, tactfully and impartially in order to achieve desired goal.

Reading and interpreting engineering and architectural plans and specifications. Interpreting and applying City codes and ordinances. Effective use of a computer and phone including email, text, Excel, Word, PDF’s, online meetings and other related inspection software; must be able to work effectively from a mobile field office environment.

Mental and Physical Abilities

Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail. Ability to schedule and coordinate a daily inspection route and efficiently plan a work day. Possess confidence, knowledge, and ability to proceed with necessary work or actions without close scrutiny, direction, and/or guidance. Stable and consistent performance under pressure, opposition, confrontation, heavy workload, criticism, high diversity, and rapid change of priority.

Substantial amount of physical effort required to climb/descend ladders and for constant standing and walking often on ungraded terrain and steep changes in elevation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Inspects the construction, alteration, or remodeling of buildings and structures for compliance with the adopted Building Codes. Performs minimum housing inspections to ensure that minimum standards for health and safety are met. Performs inspections on a wide array of scopes including Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical but will be expected to have a higher degree of skills regarding Building Code type issues including: structure, framing, moisture, roofing, accessibility, fire resistance, energy efficiency, egress issues, wall coverings, concrete and soils.

Makes notices to persons involved where work is found to be defective. Makes recommendations to contractors regarding corrective measures associated with code violations found during inspection. Interprets and explains building construction, codes, and regulations to builders, contractors, homeowners, and other interested parties. Checks complaints regarding defective construction and installations; assists in prosecution of violators of regulations. Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.

Attends and prepares and provides training to coworkers, public, contractors on code related topics. Helps with plan review as needed by supervisor. Sends standard letters to builders, contractors, and general public explaining established procedures, codes, and ordinances. Completes daily inspection report recording job location, name of contractors, and types of inspections made. Operates and performs daily entries on a computer.

Assists other inspectors and City staff with various issues and tasks as they arise. Performs other related work as requested.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure of up to 80% of work time to dirt, dust, extremes of temperature, noxious fumes and odors, heights and other related construction site hazards.

Additional Information

Selected applicant must pass background investigation, physical examination and drug screen.
