Job Title
Special Education Paraprofessional
Application NoticeApplicants recommended for hire must apply for Tier 1 certification before employment. Tuition fee $12.00 is paid directly to the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Norman Public Schools will provide details during employee processing.
Tier 1 Requirements- Completed two years of higher education study (minimum 48 college hours); or
- Obtained an associate's degree or higher; or
- Passed Work Keys, Para Pro, or Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET).
- Complete Oklahoma Special Education Paraprofessional Training at a Career Tech Center, state‑approved LEA training, or PEPPER modules.
- Maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
- Complete training in Universal Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogens.
- Complete an additional six hours of professional development in Universal Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogens each school year following initial certification.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- College hours preferred and may assist in meeting Tier 1 requirements.
- Meet Tier 1 requirements.
- Previous work or volunteer experience with children, teenagers, or clerical duties preferred.

Position SummaryThis role assists teachers in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students with behavior challenges. Duties include administering behavior modification and de‑escalation techniques, increasing participation in academic tasks, improving social skills, supporting appropriate behavior, and performing clerical duties as assigned.
Experience- Experience working with children/teenagers who have behavior challenges.
- Experience working with students with special needs.
- De‑escalation experience.
- Successful experience working in an intervention setting and in the classroom.
- Behavior modification and de‑escalation techniques.
- Social interaction skills of students with special needs.
- Basic subjects taught in district schools.
- Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
- Basic first aid and CPR procedures.
- Health and safety regulations pertaining to the position.
- English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal relations: tact, patience, courtesy.
- Basic record‑keeping skills.
- District policies, rules, regulations.
- Develop rapport and interact effectively with students.
- Demonstrate understanding, patience, and a receptive attitude toward children with special needs.
- Apply behavior modification and de‑escalation techniques.
- Work with students having special needs and/or aggressive behaviors.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Maintain emotional control under difficult situations.
- Cooperatively work with others.

- Assist with instructional and related activities of the learning environment.
- Clerical duties: charting performance, filing, maintaining records.
