26/27 - Special Education Classroom Teacher

Norman Public Schools Irving Middle School is seeking a Special Education Classroom Teacher. The ideal candidate will have a current Oklahoma Certificate as a Special Education Teacher and a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education. This position reports to the Building Administrator and follows the Certified Salary Schedule.

The contract length is 182 days for returning teachers and 182 days plus an induction week for new teachers. The work schedule includes 30 minutes before and after school and participation in special events outside the regular workday. The job includes 10 days of sick leave and 3 days of personal business leave. The teacher retirement is fully paid by Norman Public Schools.

The job will be evaluated in accordance with Oklahoma laws and Norman Public School Board of Education policy.

Essential job functions include performing applicable job functions of a Classroom Teacher, initiating/participating in categorical eligibility meetings, ensuring each child has a current IEP with required signatures, monitoring implementation of IEPs, reviewing and writing IEPs annually, and creating and maintaining a working special education file. The teacher will provide advice on special education issues, conduct staff in-service sessions, collaborate with regular education staff, and manage the physical, social, and educational needs of students.

The teacher will also inform appropriate staff of necessary medical and other information, assist in medication administration, and perform other duties as assigned.

Successful performance of the job requires good customer service/people skills, problem-solving abilities, compliance with safety guidelines, adherence to school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns for staff. Creativity, initiative, and effective problem-solving are critical to the success of the position. The incumbent will utilize discretion, ingenuity, and independent judgment due to the complexity of the job.
