Position IntroductionThe Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History is seeking a part-time Student Communications & Media Assistant for summer 2026, and the 2026–2027 academic year to assist in growing our media presence on a variety of platforms. The individual selected will work with the museum’s PR & Marketing Officer and museum staff to gather content for internal and external communications, including but not limited to, the website, social media, and e-newsletters.
Additional responsibilities include sharing content to engage our audience via social media and promote natural and cultural history. Responsibilities will include other duties as assigned. The student assistant will need to have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the technical ability to design or produce content and share it with our audience. Some interest in and familiarity with journalism will be necessary to understand and accurately disseminate information.
Education and Experience
- Must be currently enrolled in a combination of two terms as a student at the University of Oklahoma.
- Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office suite of products and Internet
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and social media
- Familiarity with graphic design using Canva or similar tools
- Familiarity/Interest in working with Word Press or similar web design tools
- Strong communication and writing/editing skills
- Experience in content discovery and ability to write in a scientific and creative manner to optimize content
- Highly organized, detail oriented, able to handle multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
- Communicate and interact effectively, respectfully and appropriately with co-workers, media and public
- Experience working with multiple social media platforms in a professional or organizational setting
- Strategically planning posts on all platforms to assure maximum reach
- Assisting in the development of visual media elements to highlight the work of the museum
- Scheduling content posts
- Engaging with followers in a professional setting
- Maintaining and growing our audiences
- Assisting with outreach events, including photography
- Other duties as assigned

Department Preferences- Ability to work throughout Summer and Fall 2026, and Spring 2027
- Journalism, public relations, marketing, communication, or arts management majors preferred
- Experience or interest in media production
- Experience or interest in using video and still photography equipment such as DSCR, audio capture, smart phone or similar tools
- Experience or interest in video editing software such as Adobe Premier, Canva, or similar tools
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Familiarity with principles and best practices of organizing, writing, editing, and publishing effective content across different communication and media platforms
- Experience or interest in working in a museum or non-profit environment
- Experience or interest in using project management, analytics, and tracking software tools
