J.D. McCarty Center is looking for a Charge Nurse to join our team! This person is responsible for supporting the RN, LPN, and Direct Care Specialists in the hospital units with providing nursing care and treatments to developmentally disabled patients, birth‑21, with a variety of medical conditions.

The ideal candidate will display compassion, education, proficiency and experience while assisting the patient. This critical role assists in creating and managing nursing care plans and will participate in the evaluation of current and future medical needs of the patient.

Starting salary is $70,000.00 per year and will be based on experience.

Responsibilities

Provides professional nursing care and services to developmentally disabled patients demonstrating reliability and competency in accordance with the Nursing Practices Act and State Health Department standards to include administration of medications/ treatments and proper documentation. Functions as part of a direct care team to provide supervision, support and/or assistance to RNs, LPNs and Direct Care Specialists.

Coordinates with interdiciplinary team members in admissions, discharges and furloughs of patients in accordance to agency policies and procedures. Participates with interdiciplinary team in the communication and distribution of patient information during team meetings. May attend weekly inpatient staffings. Presents nursing information/behavioral observations. Receives current patient status from inter‑departmental reports and delivers information/reports to other nursing staff.

Upon arrival receives report from Charge Nurse or designated licensed staff member concerning events occurring during shift to include but not t limited to: any changes in patient status medically, behaviorally, therapeutically, update of new physician orders, status of the orders, etc. Contact the Lead DCS to ensure appropriate staffing is in place for patient care based on established acuity system to include bringing in the on‑call DCS staff when necessary.

Provides supervision, oversight, and support to RNs, LPNs, and Direct Care staff concerning patient needs and care. Responsible for signing off on all LPN assessments. Coordinates with HU Nurse to ensure DCS interventions are in accordance with the established nursing plan of care and agency policy and procedures. Reports any employee related problems to the Director of Nursing or Nurse Manager in order to maintain order/discipline and provide safe nursing care.

When available, work with Lead DCS to provide breaks and mealtimes for Direct Care staff. Will be available for breaks and/or mealtimes for Nursing staff.

Provides ongoing education and training in relation to day‑to‑day aspects of patient care. Provide training in the following procedures/processes to ensure efficiency and accuracy: procedures in emergent situation, labs, entering orders, reading over behavior plans, training on behavior plans to understand the execution required for DCS, time management, planner, staffing notes, EHR changes (Menstrual cycle tracking and furlough changes), discharges, furloughs, inventory, entering FSBS, vital signs, weight, height, etc.

When notified by HU Nurse, supports staff who are responsible to provide patient intervention when critical and/or emergency situations occurs. Assist the licensed nurse in completing appropriate actions i.e. first aid, phone doctor, notify DON, take vitals, etc., and accurately documents all care/interventions in the EHR. Ensures safety and quality patient care is delivered in accordance with established care plans. In regards to patient restraint/seclusion issues or concerns, will assist the nurse in assessing and determining if either is necessary based on patient's nursing care plans and agency's policies and procedures to include obtaining physician's orders per policy, document all interventions in the EHR, perform on‑going assessment for the duration of the restraint/seclusion and ensure all aspects of the restraint/seclusion are performed in accordance with the agency's policy and procedure.
