Nursing Assistant (NA)

The Nursing Assistant serves as a caregiver to residents in long‑term care, providing resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The role includes age‑appropriate care for the physical and psychological needs of residents as outlined in each resident’s care plan, while adhering to infection prevention and control policies and proper use of personal protective equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Assist residents with daily living activities, including bathing, toileting, grooming, and dressing.
  • Obtain and record vital signs and support psychosocial needs of residents.
  • Help residents transfer, reposition, and walk using appropriate techniques and equipment; provide range‑of‑motion and passive exercises.
  • Prepare food and assist residents with meals and snacks, ensuring a positive dining experience.
  • Assist health‑care staff with procedures when required and ensure accurate documentation of resident interactions and outcomes.
  • Communicate changes in residents’ conditions or concerns to the charge nurse.
  • Collect non‑invasive body fluid specimens and gather vital signs.
  • Maintain cleanliness of residents’ living areas through housekeeping and laundry services.
  • Participate in wellness and recreational programs and encourage resident participation.
  • Engage in departmental or organizational committees and task forces as needed.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate or GED (preferred but not required).
  • Minimum age of 16 years.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification from the State Board of Nursing (or state‑certified CNA) required within four months of starting the position; training and certification provided by the facility.
  • Successfully complete yearly, department‑specific competency testing and maintain a record of continuing education credits each year.
  • Minimum of 12 continuing‑education hours required annually.
  • Maintain all department‑specific required certifications; when applicable, be registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
Driver and Other Requirements
  • In certain facilities, the role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver; a valid driver’s license, a motor‑vehicle report, and medical clearance to perform driving duties are required.
