Summary

This position is located at the NOAA Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK. The role is for 1 vacancy.

Duties

As a Meteorologist, you will:

  • Work as a senior forecaster on a shift team responsible to the SPC Lead.
  • Ensure quality and timeliness of analysis and forecast products.
  • Conduct continuous weather watches for the preparation and issuance of SPC severe weather discussions and outlooks.
  • Serve as SPC staff specialist on mesoscale analysis for the development of severe weather public awareness programs.
Requirements

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, eligible for Federal employment, registered for Selective Service if applicable, and meet qualifications set by the closing date. A one‑year probationary period may apply. A moderate risk security clearance is required. Background investigation is required.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
:
Positive Education Requirement or one year of specialized experience, or a combination of education and experience.

EDUCATION
:

  • Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related natural science major with coursework in meteorology, atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, analysis and prediction, physical meteorology, remote sensing, physics, differential equations, and related physical science majors.
  • Minimum 24 semester hours in meteorology/atmospheric science, including six semester hours each of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, analysis and prediction, and three semester hours of physical meteorology, plus two semester hours of remote sensing.
  • Six semester hours of physics with laboratory, three semester hours of ordinary differential equations, and at least nine semester hours in additional physical science subjects.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE
:

  • One full year of experience equivalent to GS‑12, including analyses of mesoscale meteorological processes, issuing meteorological discussions and outlooks for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and short‑term winter weather hazards, and providing forecasts and guidance to customers on severe weather events.
