Utility Operator – Storm, Water & Sanitary Utilities
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Utility Operator to join our construction team. The ideal candidate will have experience installing and maintaining underground storm sewer, water, and sanitary sewer systems while operating heavy equipment safely and efficiently. This position requires knowledge of utility construction, trench safety, grading, and the ability to work effectively as part of a crew in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, skid steers, dozers, backhoes, and compactors.
- Install storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water distribution systems according to project plans and specifications.
- Perform excavation, trenching, grading, and back filling operations.
- Set manholes, catch basins, inlets, valves, hydrants, and related utility structures.
- Read and interpret construction plans, grade stakes, and utility drawings.
- Work safely around existing underground utilities and follow utility locating requirements.
- Ensure proper trench safety practices, including shoring, sloping, and trench box installation.
- Assist with pipe laying, laser setup, grade checking, and utility testing.
- Perform daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance.
- Maintain a clean and safe job site while complying with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Work closely with foremen, superintendents, and other crew members to complete projects on schedule.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in underground utility construction.
- Experience installing storm drainage, water mains, and sanitary sewer systems.
- Proficient in operating heavy construction equipment.
- Ability to read blueprints, grades, and construction plans.
- Knowledge of OSHA excavation and trench safety requirements.
- Experience working around existing utilities and interpreting utility locates.
- Valid driver’s license (preferred but not required).
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to safety.
Preferred Qualifications
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- Experience with GPS machine control and laser grading equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in trenches for extended periods.
- Ability to work overtime and occasional weekends as project schedules require.
