Job Summary

The Substitute Teacher is responsible for implementing instructional plans and maintaining a productive learning environment in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The position ensures continuity of instruction and supports student learning and behavior expectations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Implement lesson plans and instructional activities as provided by the regular teacher
  • Maintain classroom discipline and ensure a safe, respectful learning environment
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, and other school settings
  • Take accurate attendance and follow school procedures
  • Adapt instruction and activities to meet student needs as appropriate
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and District records
  • Communicate effectively with school staff regarding student behavior or concerns
  • Leave appropriate notes for the regular teacher regarding progress and issues
  • Follow all district policies, procedures, and emergency protocols
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Oregon Teaching License or Substitute Teaching License issued by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission
  • Successful completion of criminal background check, fingerprinting, and drug screening
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to manage classroom behavior effectively
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Flexibility to work in different classrooms, grade levels, and subject areas
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Basic understanding of instructional practices and student engagement
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in a school environment
  • May require standing, walking, and supervising students for extended periods
  • Exposure to typical classroom noise levels and activities
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and move throughout the classroom
  • Ability to supervise and respond quickly to student needs
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds (occasionally)
Terms of Employment
  • On-call, temporary, as-needed/at-will basis
  • No guarantee of minimum hours
