Job Summary

This position promotes and maintains the health and well‑being of students in the classroom setting, enabling them to take full advantage of available educational opportunities. The nurse assists classroom teachers in meeting the physical and health care needs of medically fragile and special‑needs students during the school day.

Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training or equivalent is required.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides necessary medical and nursing care for assigned student and works closely with classroom teacher(s) to adapt work, homework, materials to support student learning and comprehension.
  • Actively participates in the student’s school day, accompanies the student on school‑based activities or potential field trips held within the school day assignment, and maintains medical equipment and supplies at school for the student as needed.
  • Collaborates with the classroom teacher and building school nurse regarding implementation of 504 Plans, Individual Education Plans, Individual Health Care Plans, Emergency Care Plans, and emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the assignment when the student will not be attending a full school day.
  • Establishes a plan of communication between the building school nurse, parents, and medical provider.
  • Maintains an accurate health record on the assigned student and documents health‑related activities and treatments as appropriate.
  • May be required to ride the school bus with students or attend field trips occurring during school hours.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Delegates and monitors health‑care tasks that can be performed by unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) according to district policy, the state nurse practice act, and professional judgment as a licensed registered nurse.

Reporting Relationship

Reports to the School Principal and Supervisor of Nursing Services.

Working Conditions

Working as a registered nurse can be physically demanding with frequent interruptions. The role may require standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods and performing tasks such as bending, stretching, lifting, and operating medical equipment. Fine‑motor dexterity is required for medication administration, injections, and other procedures. The nurse must use close vision and distance vision while reading records, and may be exposed to communicable disease and bodily secretions.

Education and Experience

Current Washington State licensure as a Registered Nurse.

Current certification in first aid and CPR;
Current Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/automated external defibrillator (AED) certification.

Pediatric, adolescent, or school nursing experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively. Knowledge of correct grammar and spelling. Independently performs a health assessment, performs clean intermittent catheterization, provides gastrostomy tube feedings, deep tracheal suctioning, tracheostomy care, and respiratory care. Operates computer and learns specific software programs for charting. Maintains confidential records. Interacts with children warmly and confidently. Supervises others and works as part of a team.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: Based on the current ESP Collective Bargaining Agreement. Rate of pay will be in accordance with the current ESP salary schedule (Level III, 2025/26). FLSA Non‑Exempt.

Work Year: Hours and days vary.

Benefits: Washington state health insurance coverage (SEBB) and a Washington state retirement package for eligible positions. Eligibility if anticipated to work at least 630 hours per school year (September 1 through August 31). SEBB benefits include:
