A day in the life

You begin by reviewing job orders, blueprints, and design data. You plan the machining strategy—selecting tools, establishing the operation sequence, and calculating spindle speeds and feed rates. You determine datums, cutting paths, and hole locations and compute linear/angular dimensions, radii, and curvatures to drive accurate tool motion.

Next, you author programs in the controller’s native language or within a CAM platform and store them on company network drives. You may run simulations or conduct trial cuts to validate motion and clamp strategies. If an issue appears, you revise the code or CAM strategies to remove errors, then retest until the result is right. You compare program outputs and computer printouts to original drawings to verify compliance, and you continuously improve existing programs for cycle‑time and quality gains.

You also enter commands to save and retrieve part patterns, graphical data, or transfer programs to other media as needed.
