The Science Learning Center (SLC) is seeking a student tutor to support peers enrolled in Organic Chemistry courses. This role focuses on helping students develop a strong understanding of reaction mechanisms, structure–function relationships, and problem‑solving strategies through guided practice, conceptual explanation, and peer‑supported learning.
Schedule Requirements- Availability between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
- 10–20 hours per week
- Combination of daytime and at least one evening shift preferred
- Opportunities for both in-person and online tutoring
- Assist students in understanding:
- Functional groups and molecular structure
- Reaction mechanisms (e.g., substitution, elimination, addition)
- Structure–function relationships and reactivity patterns
- Stereochemistry and molecular interactions
- Guide students in applying concepts to:
- Reaction prediction and mechanism steps
- Problem‑solving and exam preparation
- Lab concepts and analysis
- Use technology tools (screen sharing, digital whiteboards, etc.) to support learning.
- Maintain accurate documentation of tutoring sessions as required.
- Contribute to a supportive, welcoming learning environment.
- Current student in good academic standing
- Successful completion of Organic Chemistry I (Organic Chemistry II preferred)
- Demonstrated strong understanding of course content
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Comfortable interacting with peers in both in-person and virtual environments
- Faculty recommendation or referral letter
- Previous tutoring, mentoring, or leadership experience
- Completion of Organic Chemistry II
- Strong ability to explain reaction mechanisms clearly
- Comfort using technology for learning support (e.g., Zoom, digital whiteboards)
This is a Non-Federal Work Study position.
