Position Summary
The Walsh University Campus Police Department is a comprehensive full‑service police department that exists to serve and protect our students, faculty, staff and guests. Our mission is to provide a safe and secure living and learning environment by actively partnering with the campus community. The department takes a proactive and progressive approach to campus policing, utilizing a community policing model. The casual Campus Police Officer – midnight shift position provides public safety, law enforcement and security services for all Walsh University owned and operated property.
The position requires officers to uphold a service‑oriented attitude, flexibility, the ability to exercise discretion, and a strong moral and ethical character.
- Patrol the campus on a regular basis to maintain good order, safety, and security.
- Patrol by vehicle and by foot to detect and deter crime.
- Ensure physical security of property and assess building and campus entry points.
- Control parking by ticketing violators and preparing lot(s) for special events.
- Lock and unlock buildings and rooms as required by authorized members of the campus community.
- Work closely with the Residence Life staff in matters of student conduct.
- Prepare and maintain records, reports and correspondence in compliance with University business practices and local, state and federal laws.
- Maintain confidentiality of reports and records and handle extremely sensitive information with appropriate sharing.
- Complete investigations in a timely manner.
- Work night shift, with the potential for extra duty assignments, and special details.
- Support the mission and values of the police department and Walsh University.
- Maintain an Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy (OPOTA) basic officer certification while employed.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Must demonstrate an understanding of the Walsh University Statement of Faith and a commitment to support the Mission, Vision, Values and Code of Ethical Conduct of Walsh University in accordance with Ex Corde Ecclesiae and the Catholic intellectual tradition.
- Education:
high school diploma or GED; at least 21 years of age; valid Ohio Driver's License; physical and mental state of fitness to adequately perform the essential job functions;
Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy OPOTA basic officer certification; ability to meet agency firearms qualifications. - Work Experience:
ability to work effectively with students, faculty and staff; strong verbal and written communication skills; computer skills (email, word processing, data entry) necessary; applicant must have good moral character with a clear arrest and driving record; campus policing background helpful but not required. - Skills and abilities:
professional demeanor and ability to interact with charity towards students, staff and faculty; positive attitude is a must.
Physical and mental demands may vary by shift. Tasks are performed outside while using a patrol vehicle or on foot. Physical duties may include heavy lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying heavy loads. Employees must be able to physically subdue and restrain potentially violent persons and remain mentally alert to make fine discriminations under rapidly changing conditions.
