Position OverviewThe Service Worker performs a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled duties involving the maintenance, repair, construction, operation, and improvement of City infrastructure, facilities, equipment, utilities, and public property. Service Workers support the daily operations of the City’s Streets, Water Distribution, Sanitary Sewer, Parks, and Facilities functions as assigned. Work involves operating vehicles and equipment, performing physical labor, responding to emergencies, participating in snow and ice control operations, maintaining public infrastructure and facilities, and providing services to residents and businesses.
Employees are expected to work safely, perform duties independently or as part of a team, and demonstrate professionalism while interacting with coworkers, contractors, vendors, and the public. Service Workers may be assigned to specific departments and are expected to develop and maintain proficiency in the equipment, operations, regulations, certifications, and responsibilities associated with their assigned area.
- Perform maintenance, repair, construction, inspection, and operational duties associated with City infrastructure, utilities, facilities, parks, equipment, and public property.
- Assist with the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of infrastructure, equipment, facilities, and related systems.
- Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance activities.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, equipment, vehicles, and machinery necessary to perform assigned work.
- Perform excavation, grading, landscaping, site restoration, material handling, and general labor activities as required.
- Assist with special projects, seasonal operations, and emergency repairs.
- Operate assigned vehicles, trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, and specialized machinery safely and efficiently.
- Conduct routine inspections, preventative maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs on assigned equipment.
- Identify and report equipment deficiencies, maintenance needs, and safety concerns.
- Maintain equipment, tools, vehicles, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
- Participate in snow and ice control operations, including plowing, salting, equipment operation, and emergency call‑out assignments.
- Respond to after‑hours emergencies, weather events, utility failures, infrastructure issues, and other operational incidents.
- Assist other departments during emergencies, special projects, staffing needs, and operational requirements.
- Follow all applicable federal, state, local, and departmental safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment.
- Participate in required safety meetings, certifications, continuing education, and training programs.
- Perform work in compliance with applicable environmental, operational, and regulatory requirements.
- Interact professionally with residents, businesses, contractors, vendors, utility customers, coworkers, and other stakeholders.
- Assist in documenting work activities, inspections, maintenance records, and operational reports.
- Work cooperatively with employees across departments to support City operations.
- Assist in training and mentoring employees as assigned.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

- Learns departmental operations, equipment, safety procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Demonstrates the ability to safely perform assigned tasks and develop required skills.
- Obtains and maintains required certifications and licenses, including a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and City requirements.
