Summary:
As a Field Service Technician, you will troubleshoot, test, diagnose, and repair primarily power generation equipment, from a company service truck, in the field. The emphasis of this position will be Caterpillar engines, air compressors, switch gear, and generator end. In a Field Service Technician position, you will have the satisfaction of keeping our customers working and contributing to building the world around you!
Functions & Responsibilities
- Works in field conditions, out of a service truck, without the normal support functions of a service shop.
- Cleans mechanical parts and components.
- Transports components, parts, and equipment as directed around the facility.
- Performs maintenance activities on new and rebuilt/repaired engines and equipment, including cleaning, repair, troubleshooting, diagnostics, overhauling, rebuilding, and reconditioning.
- Maintains service truck.
- Reads, understands, and applies complex wiring diagrams and hydraulic schematics.
- Locates and uses service literature and/or technical information.
- Operates various types of cleaning equipment under supervision.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area.
- Works with supervisor to follow a career development plan.
- Completes service reports as required.
- Attends required training classes.
- Determines reusability of parts by published Caterpillar reusability guidelines.
- Uses company and Caterpillar service information systems, procedures, and publications, such as ET, SIS, NPR, specifications, manuals, parts books, and assembly/disassembly procedures.
- Initiates parts salvage requests.
- Communicates problems and the nature of repair to supervisors.
- Provides direction, training, and guidance to assigned service technicians.
- Directs other servicemen as required.
- Keeps up to date with developments in tooling, technologies, and systems.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Three or more years of experience with electrical power generator service and repair is required, from 5 kw up to 2 mg, preferably with Caterpillar equipment.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record by Ohio CAT standards.
- Have a thorough understanding of equipment, and preventative maintenance procedures, and be able to perform minor repairs.
- Strong technical service skills, mechanical aptitude, experience with power generation equipment required, and strong DC electrical and machine electronic system knowledge is crucial.
- Must follow technical material and apply processes and procedures as needed to complete repairs and manufacturers’ updates, as required.
- College and/or continued education in a technical field are a plus.
- Possess the ability to work in a low-supervised environment and take direction from multiple supervisors.
- Be able to communicate effectively with customers, supervision, and dispatchers both verbally and in writing.
- Possesses basic math skills.
Lifting/Carrying 40 lb. Lift/Carry and 50 lb pulling. Standing/Sitting Up and downstairs, standing, sitting, and climbing into machines. Dexterity Normal. Repetitive Motions Frequent movement requiring hands, wrists, and fingers. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in office settings and moderate to loud in other situations, with both constant and sudden loud noises possible.
