Job Description

Martin County High School is currently accepting applications for a Media Assistant for the upcoming school year (

Start Date:

August 2026). This is a temporary position and is currently only funded for the 2026-27 school year. Employment beyond the end of the upcoming school year is subject to the continued availability of grant funds.

The employee will be required to obtain and maintain a license to drive a school bus and to drive when needed to efficiently and effectively operate the school transportation system (Board Policy 4701).

Qualifications
  • Associate Degree related to Education or 48 semester hours of transferable college coursework. (Official transcript is required to validate education.) OR
  • Bronze-level Work Keys Career Readiness Certification (NCRC) or above and a score of 3 or higher on the Work Keys Business Writing assessment. (Tests are offered at Martin Community College.)
  • Current and valid driver's license.
Nature of Work

The Media Assistant assists the school in maintaining the daily operations of the media center and provides support to students and staff using a variety of library resources.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Administrative skills to interpret policies regarding copyright laws as applicable to books, videos, and software.
  • Collaborative skills to work constructively and cooperatively with others.
  • Common arithmetical function to collect fines and fees for lost books and depositing money from book fairs.
  • Communication skills to effectively communicate with students and staff.
  • Computer skills to install printers, basic hardware/software troubleshooting, and to assist students/faculty with computer programs for research.
  • Software/word processing skills to write memos, catalog new materials, check materials in and out of the library, and operate the various media center programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs tasks at the circulation desk, including checking in and out materials and equipment, preparing materials to be shelved, advising students, parents, and staff of library media regulations, procedures, programs and services.
  • Utilizes computers to prepare and maintain various files and records, to determine location and status of books and materials, and printout reports, labels, catalog records, etc.; prepares and maintains cataloging files, lists, indexes, bibliographies, computer files, etc.
  • Performs reference tasks such as searching for material and answering reference questions and requests and instructing students in the use of reference resources, e.g. online, electronic, and print, bibliographies, and public access catalogs.
  • Instructs and assists students in the use of automated reading programs, reference materials, and library equipment, such as scanners, cameras, copiers, and compact disc players; performs minor maintenance on library equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains information files, sorting material according to topics, periodically weeds files, discarding dated and irrelevant material.
  • Compiles computer generated data and prepares statistical reports on attendance, program participation, collection, maintenance, circulation, etc.
  • Processes new books and other materials, entering data into online catalog database and attaching barcodes, labels, and book covers as needed.
  • Prepares damaged books for bindery, affixes barcodes, processes books returned from bindery, and amends records.
  • Processes incoming mail daily, preparing periodicals for use by students and teachers.
  • Searches shelves for materials reported as returned and for material designated for withdrawal; amends records as appropriate.
  • Answers telephone and receives and replies to inquiries or requests via fax and or electronic mail.
  • Assists with the planning and development of curriculum-related programs.
  • Prepares bulletin board displays reflecting themes of seasons, holidays, historical events, and literacy connections appropriate for school-age children.
