Summer Camp Lead Counselor; Seasonal Part-time

Person County Government is seeking an experienced, energetic, and organized professional to serve as a Summer Camp Lead Counselor (Part‑time) with the Person County Recreation, Arts, and Parks Department. This leadership role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about youth development and ready to guide both campers and staff in delivering a safe, engaging, and high‑quality summer day camp experience.

This position begins early June and runs through the end of July. Training dates will be the end of May and early June. Hours are dependent on specific camp site needs; typically 37.5‑40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Part‑time employees cannot work more than 1,000 hours per calendar year.

Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record based on County policy.

• Create, with departmental assistance, an innovative daily program for children six through eleven years of age representing various socio‑economic backgrounds (Rising first through sixth graders).
• Responsible for attendance records.
• Responsible for daily inventory of equipment and supplies.
• Responsible for requisition of all needed materials for assigned areas.
• Submit maintenance requests for sites or equipment as needed.
• Directly responsible for daily inspection of day camp site for cleanliness, safety, and overall operational excellence.
• Assist in supervision and coordination of day camp staff.
• Present weekly reports concerning your areas at staff meetings.
• Responsible for having ice packs, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, phone, and emergency guides available for staff.
• Follow fully all charges of the Recreation, Arts & Parks Department’s Recreation Program Supervisor.
• Promote the general day camp program utilizing the following outline:
  • Sports/Games/Outdoor Skills
    • Promotion of team activities
    • Promotion of individual activities
    • Promotion of outdoor nature activities
    • Promotion of quiet games
  • Humanities/Craft Skills
    • Promotion of music/dance‑oriented activities
    • Promotion of dramatic activities
    • Promotion of art and handicraft projects

• Minimum of high school diploma or GED.
• Previous recreation experience preferred.
• Ability to supervise and lead multiple Day Camp Counselors.
• Skilled in handling disruptive behavior in a calm and constructive manner.
• Proven experience working with school‑age children.
• Ability to adapt to daily time schedule, departmental policies, dress code, and equipment care as instructed by Recreation Program Supervisor.
• Must possess valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record based on County policy.
• CPR & First Aid certification required.
