Position: North Topsail Beach, NC – Building Code Administrator
Location: North Topsail Beach

MTG is pleased to partner with North Topsail Beach, NC (Pop. 1, K – 33K seasonally) in search of a new Building Codes Administrator to inspect construction and installation work in progress, and enforce State codes for building construction including the four trade areas of building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical, and for any provisions required by Town regulations.

The town has 42 employees, and the new Building Codes Administrator will oversee a budget of approximately $300,000 and one employee.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review Construction Plans: Looks over site plans, blueprints, and other documents to understand new construction or major repair projects and ensure they meet state and local building codes.
  • Conduct Inspections: Inspect new and renovated buildings—residential, commercial, industrial, and multi-story—to ensure they follow building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes, as well as Town regulations.
  • Provide Code Guidance: Offers expert advice and makes final decisions on code interpretations. Works closely with contractors to help them understand and apply the rules.
  • Oversee Permitting: Supervises a permitting technician, manages the permitting process, and keeps accurate records of inspections, plans, and related documents. Prepare reports as needed.
  • Lead Disaster Assessments: After major events, assess property damage and safety risks. May order utility disconnections at unsafe sites.
  • Handle Complaints: Responds to citizen concerns about contractors, construction quality, and related issues.
  • Manage Budget and Equipment: Help develop the budget, oversee purchases, and ensure vehicles and equipment are properly maintained.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • (Multi-trade) Standard Level 3 Certification in Building, Plumbing, Electrical and Mechanical from the North Carolina Code Officials Qualifications Board.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in building inspection, code enforcement, or construction.
  • Supervisory or lead inspector experience.

Salary Range

The hiring rate will be based on specific education, experience, and certifications. Salary range is $60,394 to $93,611.
