A Construction Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day field operations of construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, within quality standards, and in accordance with project plans and specifications. The Superintendent serves as the primary on-site leader and coordinates subcontractors, trades, suppliers, inspectors, project management, and other stakeholders throughout the construction process.
Key Responsibilities- Direct and supervise daily construction activities and overall jobsite operations.
- Coordinate subcontractors, trades, suppliers, equipment, and material deliveries.
- Review construction drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and project schedules.
- Develop and maintain short-term schedules and coordinate activities to meet project milestones.
- Monitor construction progress and communicate project status, delays, and field conditions to the Project Manager.
- Conduct daily site inspections to verify workmanship and compliance with plans and specifications.
- Enforce company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and jobsite safety procedures.
- Conduct or participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and job hazard assessments.
- Identify construction conflicts, field issues, and potential delays and work with the project team to develop solutions.
- Coordinate inspections with building officials, engineers, architects, and other authorities having jurisdiction.
- Maintain daily reports documenting manpower, subcontractor activities, weather conditions, deliveries, inspections, progress, and significant jobsite events.
- Monitor subcontractor performance and ensure work is completed according to contractual requirements.
- Coordinate sequencing of trades to minimize conflicts and maintain productivity.
- Maintain quality-control standards and develop punch lists as necessary.
- Verify that corrective and punch-list work is completed before project closeout.
- Assist with RFIs, change orders, submittals, and documentation of changed or unforeseen field conditions.
- Maintain a clean, organized, professional, and secure construction site.
- Participate in owner, architect, contractor, and project coordination meetings as required.
- Coordinate project startup, construction, inspections, commissioning, substantial completion, and final turnover.
The Construction Superintendent provides field leadership to ensure all project participants understand daily priorities, schedule requirements, safety expectations, and quality standards. The Superintendent must communicate effectively with subcontractors, project managers, owners, architects, engineers, inspectors, and field personnel while resolving issues professionally and maintaining project momentum.
Qualifications- Strong knowledge of commercial and/or residential construction methods and sequencing.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
- Experience supervising subcontractors and multiple construction trades.
- Knowledge of OSHA requirements and construction safety practices.
- Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to identify potential schedule and constructability issues before they affect project performance.
- Experience with construction scheduling, daily reporting, quality control, and project documentation.
- Ability to work independently and make timely field decisions.
- Proficiency with construction management software, email, electronic drawings, and standard computer applications is preferred.
