Responsible for traveling to designated practices and assisting the assigned doctor. This involves not only assisting the surgeon with their duties, but also working closely with the patient to ensure they’re comfortable. The Chairside Oral Surgery Assistant must have great attention to detail, be organized, and maintain patient comfort throughout the procedure. Key responsibilities include preparing equipment before surgery, discussing the procedure and any after‑care with patients, helping surgeons maintain patient vital statistics, and maintaining inventory in operatories and supply rooms.
KeyTasks & Responsibilities:
- Assist the Sedation Dentist/Oral Surgeon in rendering patient care
- Accurately take medical histories
- Seat and prepare patients for treatment
- Clean operatory after treatment procedures
- Set up for surgical procedures
- Be knowledgeable on emergency protocols
- Help doctor accurately maintain safe counts and patient logs
- Maintain Emergency Drug Box and Crash Cart
- Monitor patient vital signs and intravenous fluids during surgery and notify the surgeon about an issue as soon as it occurs
- Prepare patients for treatment by talking them through the procedure and preparing for general anesthesia or IV sedation
- Accurately monitor the patient during IV Sedation and record it on the anesthesia record
- Send out Pre‑op, Post‑op and MD clearance letters
- Accurately maintain biopsy reports and logs
- Accurately review post‑operative instructions
- Monitors operatory supply levels
- Expose radiographs and accurately take CT scans and intraoral pictures
- Takes preliminary impression for needed procedures
- Monitors prosthetic cases and ensures they are ready for the patient’s appointment
- Other duties as assigned
- Exceptional planning and organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Having the expertise to anticipate patients and doctors’ needs
- Must be very punctual
- Computer literacy
- Dental Assistant Certification is required
- State of NC X‑Ray Certification
- High School Diploma or GED
- Ability to lift 15–20 lbs.
