Architect

We are seeking an Architect to manage university capital improvement projects from conception through completion at Winston‑Salem State University.

Position Overview

As an Architect, you will coordinate the design, bidding, construction, and closeout of campus facilities, ensuring quality, cost control, and adherence to university timelines.

Responsibilities
  • Manage assigned capital improvement projects from inception through bidding, construction contract award, construction, and closeout.
  • Assist with defining building programs, including requirements for space, equipment, and infrastructure.
  • Administer construction phases of projects:
    • Review and process construction contracts.
    • Attend pre‐construction conferences and progress meetings.
    • Perform construction inspections.
    • Audit, review, and approve contractor payments.
    • Review and approve designer payments for construction administration.
    • Conduct final inspections and accept work on behalf of the university.
  • Collect and reconcile review comments from Facilities Operations, EHS, Campus Police, and other stakeholders at all design stages.
  • Ensure all closeout documents are completed and meet internal requirements.
  • Provide input to initial project budgeting and assist with creation of project budget requests and required documentation.
  • Track project spending, maintain detailed records, and maintain budget control to ensure on‐time, on‐budget completion.
  • Establish schedules, monitor project status, and ensure designers and contractors adhere to timelines.
  • Participate in designer selection for all capital projects (advertising, shortlisting, interviews).
  • Review all capital improvement projects for quality and cost control, ensuring:
    • Building systems appropriate to the building function.
    • Detailing of the building envelope addresses weatherability, constructability, maintainability, and cost.
    • The plan is responsive to the program, efficient, cost‐effective, and enhances the campus.
Qualifications and Preferences

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 4–5 years of relevant experience.
  • License to practice architecture in North Carolina.
  • Valid license to practice architecture granted by the North Carolina Board of Architecture.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.

Preferred:

  • Five years of experience in architectural planning.
  • Additional coursework or degrees in management, computer applications, or communications.
  • Thorough technical knowledge of architectural programming, space planning, building code compliance, construction cost budgeting, and contract management.
  • Experience designing university buildings and understanding administrative processes of project delivery within the North Carolina state system.
  • Knowledge of Interscope, the state reporting system.
Required Conditions
  • Work during periods of adverse weather or other emergencies:
    Not mandatory.
  • Normal work schedule:
    Monday–Friday, 8‐a.m.–5‐p.m.; evenings and weekends may be required to assist contractors.
