Location: Troy
We are actively and continuously seeking qualified Adjunct instructors for our Gunsmithing, NRA, Knife Making/Bladesmithing, and Metal Engraving Programs.
Classes may be scheduled during the day, evening, or weekend hours.
Application review is continuous, and opportunities are on an as-needed basis.
Gunsmithing Instructor:
The Gunsmithing Instructor will provide classroom and lab instruction for various subjects related to Gunsmithing. Course content will introduce the basic skills needed to refurbish metal, wood, composites, and laminates as applicable to firearms, to diagnose malfunctions for repair, and to accomplish more complex custom gunsmithing tasks such as restoration of firearms, stock making, barrel work, and repair and custom work.
NRA Instructor - The NRA Instructor teaches firearm safety, marksmanship, and responsible gun ownership according to the National Rifle Association guidelines. The position involves a mix of classroom instruction and hands-on range training, requiring strong communication and patience to teach students of all experience levels. Keep responsibilities include assessing student understanding, providing feedback, ensuring all activities meet NRA standards and legal requirements, and maintaining course records.
Knife Making/Bladesmithing - The Knife Making/Bladesmithing Instructor will design, craft, and finish knives using materials like steel, wood, and composites through techniques such as forging, grinding, and heat-treating. The job involves a mix of hands-on crafting, from shaping blades to assembling handles, and administrative tasks like managing orders and customer communications. Key skills include expertise in metalworking, tool handling, and an eye for detail.
Metal Engraving - The metal engraving instructor teaches students the art and craft of creating designs, patterns, and text on metal surfaces using a variety of tools and techniques. The instructor is responsible for curriculum development, demonstrating engraving methods, ensuring a safe studio environment, and providing artistic guidance to students of all skill levels.
* Develops lectures, classroom activities, and hands-on exercises for students to participate in and learn.
* Monitors and records student progress in courses.
* Administers tests or other evaluation methods to students.
* Keeps records of student attendance.
* Creates an effective learning learning evironment and stays current with information and skills in the respective teaching field.
* Complies with college policies, internal audit procedures, and local and state rules and regulations.
* Perform other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College's mission, core values, and goals.
Education and Experience
Gunsmithing:
* Associate's degree in Gunsmithing or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and extensive hands-on experience in gunsmithing, firearm repair, or machining.
* Demonstrated expertise in firearm design, assembly, repair, metal finishing, and related shop practices.
* Prior teaching or instructional experience preferred.
* Strong commitment to safety and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and Institutional regulations regarding firearms and equipment use.
NRA:
* High School diploma or equivalent required;
Associate's degree or higher in a related field preferred.
* Current NRA Instructor Certification in applicable disciplines (pistol, rifle, shotgun, or personal protection) required.
* Extensive experience in firearms handling, safety, and marksmanship instruction.
* Prior teaching or training experience preferred.
* Must demonstrate thorough knowledge of NRA training standards and strict adherence to all safety and legal regulations.
* Strong commitment to safety and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and Institutional regulations
Knife Making/Bladesmithing:
* Three years of documented professional experience in knife making, bladesmithing, or related metalworking fields required.
* Associate's degree in a related field, such as Metalworking, Gunsmithing, or Industrial Technology, preferred, but not required.
