Job Description
An Instructor’s primary responsibility is to maintain excellence in instructing students in his/her curriculum subject with the express goal of attaining certain student learning outcomes. In addition to the primary responsibility, Instructors will be required to complete various classroom administrative duties as well as duties helpful to satisfy the goals and objectives of WCC including committee service and professional development.
This is a full-time, 12-month position housed at the Wilkes Campus, with the possibility of occasional assignments at the Wilkes and Ashe Campuses. This position may require weekend and evening hours.

Responsibilities and Expectations:
- Maintain theory class schedule.
- Maintain and update syllabus.
- Create lesson plans when needed.
- Facilitate textbook changes when needed.
- Maintain a positive learning environment.
- Evaluate students’ learning progress in the practice area and on the clinic floor.
- Practice classroom management.
- Coordinate student accommodation, including testing if indicated.
- Present lessons in a comprehensive manner and use visual/audio means to facilitate learning.
- Design engaging and interactive classes for hands‑on learners.
- Model student expectations including effective communication, dependability, critical thinking, positive customer service, and leadership.
- Student Instructor Mediator.
- Coordinate field trips or guest speakers.
- Keep a clean working environment throughout the school.
- Safety and infection control instruction.
- Practical demonstration and instruction.
- Clinic department observation.
- Manage student records, including practice area completion, grades/evaluations, and attendance, all while following HIPAA and FERPA guidelines.
- Hold students accountable.
- Track academic progress.
- Update time records when needed.
- Maintain a secure testing environment (Instructors always present).
- Be able to travel to local high schools/community events to conduct presentations about the program when needed.
- Travel to other campuses when needed.
- Contribute to curriculum improvements.
- Make sure all procedures are completed safely and by evaluation plan.
- Attend professional development activities as scheduled by the coordinator.
- Plan/Attend collaboration meetings with Wilkes Campus instructors when necessary.
- Enforce all NC State Board of Cosmetic Arts rules, regulations, and safety standards.
- Ensure students follow the WCC Cosmetology handbook and WCC Policies and Procedures.
- Supervise work‑study when needed.
- Maintain positive and productive communication with all faculty and staff.
- Guide and mentor students.
- Maintain and inventory for all equipment and supplies.
- Advisor for student Cosmetology club.
- Any other duties as assigned by the Cosmetology Coordinator.
In addition, instructors must exemplify the expectations set for students, encompassing effective communication, dependability, critical thinking, exemplary customer service, collaborative teamwork, and strong leadership skills.
Required Qualifications- Current North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts license.
- Current Cosmetology Instructor’s license with the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Arts.
- Commitment to professional development and an understanding of and commitment to the purpose of a comprehensive community college.
- Must be a team player.
- Classroom teaching experience preferred.
- 2 years of experience as a licensed cosmetology instructor, preferably within a community college.
Work is primarily performed in an academic (an office or classroom) setting with appropriate climate controls. Travel, early morning, evening, and weekend work may be required.
