Job Description

Reports to:

Principal

Supervises:
May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose:

To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Major Function:
    Management of Instructional Time

    The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • Major Function:
    Management of Student Behavior

    The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern routine administrative matters, verbal participation, and student movement; monitors behavior during all activities; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining dignity.
  • Major Function:
    Instructional Presentation

    The teacher reviews previous materials, introduces new lessons with clear objectives, speaks fluently, provides examples, assigns tasks, asks appropriate questions, conducts lessons briskly, and summarizes main points at the end.

    Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance

    The teacher sets clear standards and due dates, circulates during class work to check performance, uses oral, written, and other work products to monitor progress, and poses questions clearly one at a time.
  • Major Function:
    Instructional Feedback

    The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work to encourage growth, gives prompt feedback on out‑of‑class assignments, affirms correct responses, and supplies corrective feedback when needed.
  • Major Function:
    Facilitating Instruction

    The teacher has an instructional plan aligned with school and system‑wide goals, uses diagnostic data to revise objectives, maintains accurate records, and uses available resources to support learning.
  • Major Function:
    Interacting Within the Educational Environment

    The teacher treats all students fairly and equitably, and interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community.
  • Major Function:
    Performing Non‑Instructional Duties

    The teacher carries out non‑instructional responsibilities as assigned, follows laws and policies, and demonstrates growth through professional development.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
