Job Description

Reports to: Principal

Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Management of Instructional Time
    :
    The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; creates lessons based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS); gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • Management of Student Behavior
    :
    The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern the handling of routine administrative matters; establishes rules for student verbal participation, talk, and movement; frequently monitors behavior during class activities and transitions; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, while maintaining student dignity.
  • Instructional Presentation
    :
    The teacher begins a lesson with a review of previous materials, introduces the lesson and learning objectives, speaks fluently and precisely, presents concepts and examples, assigns tasks with high success rates, asks appropriate questions, conducts the lesson briskly, makes smooth transitions, and summarizes the main points.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
    :
    The teacher sets clear standards and due dates, circulates during class to check performance, routinely uses oral, written, and other products to assess progress, and poses questions clearly and one at a time.
  • Instructional Feedback
    :
    The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work to encourage growth, offers prompt feedback on out‑of‑class work, affirms correct responses, and provides sustaining feedback after incorrect responses.
  • Facilitating Instruction
    :
    The teacher follows an instructional plan compatible with school and system goals, uses data‑informed practices, maintains accurate records, aligns objectives with student needs, and utilizes available resources.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment
    :
    The teacher treats all students fairly, and interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community.
  • Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
    :
    The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned or needed, adheres to laws and policies, and demonstrates evidence of professional growth.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Physical Requirements: Must be able to use classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs; lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects with negligible force; perform light work while standing or walking.

Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge observable characteristics of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and signal people to convey or exchange information; receive instructions from superiors.

Language Ability: Ability to read various correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, and prepare simple reports using prescribed formats.

Intelligence: Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking, define problems, collect data, establish facts, interpret instructions, and handle abstract and concrete variables.

Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions; communicate in professional languages.
