Job Description

Reports To: Principal

Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Major Function:
    Management of Instructional Time
    – The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • Major Function:
    Management of Student Behavior
    – The teacher establishes rules and procedures for routine administration, student participation, and movement; monitors behavior during all activities; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining the dignity of the student.
  • Major Function:
    Instructional Presentation
    – The teacher reviews previous materials, introduces the lesson and learning objectives, speaks fluently, presents material in an understandable way, provides examples and demonstrations; assigns tasks with a high rate of success; asks appropriate questions; conducts instruction briskly, slowing when necessary; makes efficient transitions; summarizes main points.
  • Major Function:
    Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
    – The teacher maintains clear standards and due dates; circulates during class to check performance; uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress; poses questions clearly.
  • Major Function:
    Instructional Feedback
    – The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work; provides prompt feedback on out‑of‑class work; affirms correct responses and provides sustaining feedback after incorrect ones.
  • Major Function:
    Facilitating Instruction
    – The teacher has a plan compatible with school and system goals; uses diagnostic information; maintains accurate records; aligns objectives, strategies, assessments, and student needs; uses available resources.
  • Major Function:
    Interacting Within the Educational Environment
    – The teacher treats all students fairly; interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
  • Major Function:
    Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
    – The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned; adheres to laws, policies, rules, and regulations; follows professional development plan.
Additional Job Functions

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

  • Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hands and eyes when using office equipment.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle items such as office equipment and hand tools; minimal eye/hand/foot coordination.
